HDD Confusion! lil help please

Im building a new rig and need some HDD help and I cannot make up my mind on whats best for my situation.

What I currently have:

150gb 16mb raptor (still sealed FULLY RETURNABLE)
Want WD6400AAKS

Here are my choices.

A. Use the WD6400AAKS for dual boot/data/ 100gb/540gb partition.
B. Keep the 150gb for dual boot and games (partitioned) while the WD6400AAKS is data only.
C. Keep 150gb raptor for OS/games and buy a cheap storage drive.

My question really is based on the performance of the WD6400AAKS as a data only drive.

Will the speed of the WD6400AAKS drive make any difference if the Raptor is my OS drive?
Should I go with a cheaper storage solution since its data only?

MONEY ISNT THE ISSUE SINCE I ALREADY OWN BOTH DRIVES 🙂

The 36GB raptor is certainly the weakest link in that system, so I would replace it. If you want two drives, I would be tempted to return the 150GB raptor for another 640GB drive.

Personally, I don't see the performance increase of a 10k RPM drive justifying its cost right now. I'm with bigsnyder, I'd return the 150GB Raptor and buy a WD 640GB. The performance will be just peachy.

I dont want two drives but if overall gaming performance is better Ill do it. Option D. seems like a good choice but I wasnt sure if the speed of the WD6400AAKS really justifies the price if its data only. Im assuming the drive really shines as an OS drive.
That leaves me option C. partition the WD6400AAKS or E. Keep raptor for OS/games and buy a cheap storage drive.

Forget the money aspect as I bought the raptor with gift cards so it essentially cost me $50 + gift cards.

It is often helpful to put your pagefile on a different drive from the OS, especially if the pagefile gets borked. Someone folks also claim a performance increase in doing so.

Partition the 6400AAKS to meet your needs, take the 150 Raptor back and try to sell the 36GB on the forums....I replaced my 74GB Raptor with the 320AAKS, then the 640AAKS and have never looked back.

Tweakin- Do you game at all? Thats really all I do so you would still suggest option C. over D.?

Im really wondering if the 640 is worth it for just a data/games drive with no OS?

Or you could get 2 640Gig drives (not RAID please) if you really need more space and spread the load over two spindles.

I have 130gb of data....why would I get 1.3tb of space? lol

Anyway I just got my 640gb drive and its time to make a decision! My raptor X is for sale but it can also be returned so I can buy a video card.

The performance doesn't really justify the cost of Raptors considering how well the WD640 performs.
Waiting extra 2 seconds + having more space edges out.

2 seconds is a lifetime!

Ok I narroweed down my first post as I dont think people are reading all of it lol

less is more 🙂
