I used Macrium recently to clone my Plextor and move the image over to my new Crucial. It worked really well and I didn't run into any problems.

Your HD manufacturer might offer a free version of Acronis as logn as you have one of their drives installed (it checks). I know WD and Seagate both do this. I have used Acronis and Macrium many times and they both work very well.

Ok, any experience with true image from acronis, because I want to resize system partition

About a month ago, I replaced an older Intel 120GB SSD with a new 240GB Intel SSD. The old drive was strictly programs plus the two system partitions that Windows creates for a GPT disk.

Here is what I did:
1) Booted with Acronis disk and created an image of the whole drive.
2) Removed the old and added the new using the same SATA port.
3) Ran DiskPart (from Windows disk) to make sure the new was set for GPT. (I do not know if this step was necessary but it would not hurt anything.)
4) Booted with Acronis and copied the image to the new drive.

I started the system and it behaved like I never touched it. No messages nor pop-ups. However, Device Manager shows the new drive and updated the event dates. Disk Management shows that Acronis created the two system partitions and adjusted the program partition to fill the remaining space on the drive.

More recently, I wanted to get rid of a some games on the drive, so I copied a different image I had made of the old drive to the new and it too works fine. This time, I just used step 4 above. Acronis will delete the old partitions and recreate new ones when you restore an image.

I am using Acronis 2014. I never install it but just run it from the disk because all I want it for is to create and restore cold images.

EaseUS Todo Backup Free is excellent disk cloning software, which, as the name states, is free to home users. I've used it successfully many times.

Seagate and Western Digital offer free versions of Acronis True Image for their drives. In both cases, at least one of the drives in the chain must be from the company providing the program. Seagate owns Maxtor so their version works for both brands.

Acronis True Image WD Edition.

Seagate DiscWizard (Acronis True Image for Seagate drives).

Both programs can be started from Windows. When cloning, True Image always reboots to lower level Linux shell, while EaseUS runs directly under Windows when cloning from the main drive to the backup drive. That may explain why True Image seems to run a bit faster when cloning to another drive.

In any case, free is good, as long as it works. Hope that helps.
