HDD Choice

Well, I'm pretty much done with this new system. My next few missions will be quieting the beast that is the Tsunami, and also finding a good hard drive. Please see the setup I'm referring to in my signature. With the Ultra-D, can I run a SATAII HD? In simple terms, what is the difference now between I and II? If I can only run SATA, what's a good hard drive to get factoring in performance and quiet. I'm looking at space being anywhere from 250-300 GBs...thus prices in the $100-$150 range. What's worth getting...8mb or 16mb cache size?


OR...should I stick it out with this IDE until they release the new revision SATA HDs? I'd appreciate any/all good comments.

SATA II drives should be backward compatible with SATA controllers and if you want SATA II support, you should be able to get an inexpensive controller. That Samsung looks interesting AND popular (OOS at present).

How reliable are those samsungs?
I'm thinking of getting either a maxtor or samsung soon.

Uh..well the Samsung has a better warranty, and most dislike maxtors reliability or lack thereof.

and did elmer fudd once say, "those samsungs are ver-wee ver-wee quiet"... 😉

Watch out, though. There are reports that the Samsungs are quiet up to 200GB, but that the 250GB is anomolously(sp) loud. I can definitely attest to the P80s being very quiet drives.

Maxtor relatively unreliable? The newer ones? My somewhat new seagate is having trouble.

I dunno..I am just stating what seems to be the consensus around here, but hell, my only HD is a Maxtor. It has been working well so far for the past year.
