HDCP and a PS3

Will a PS3 work via Component at 720P on a non HDCP display?

Im going to be using my 20WMGX2 for PS3, I know it works fine via hdmi -> dvi

BTW: This is just about games not BR movies

I've never heard of PS3 requiring HDCP for games... requiring HDCP for games would make no sense.

Perfect!

I'm goin to use component since its cheaper to buy that than a DVI switch and I don't like fiddling under my monitor with DVI to swap between PC and PS3

HDCP is only for HDMI/DVI (digital signals). It doesn't matter with Component cables, as the only thing they're (not Sony, but the whole HD copyrights movement) afraid of is getting their 60Hz Blu-Ray pirated. Over Component, I think you can only get 30Hz (won't make a difference to your eyes, really).

But you said you only want 720p, which might still be at 60Hz. Dunno.

For Games, it doesn't matter unless you're using HDMI or DVI. They won't let you play games on non-HDCP digital pathways (but if it has HDMI, it probably has HDCP unless it's ancient). Only problem I see is using an old PC monitor with DVI but without HDCP.

20WMGX2 has HDCP over DVI which I have used before with my PS3 @720P

I just want to do the same but use Component

So you are saying games won't play on non HDCP only when using HDMI and DVI?

The only thing I remember about those schemes on the ps3 is that you had to go through the hdmi outlet to upscale older dvds. Everything else should work regardless of connection to the limit o that connection.

There is no reason for them to require you to use HDCP to play games. HDCP is intended to prevent you from pirating movies by recording the output from the player. There's no reason to prevent you from recording the output of video games.

There's no reason for them to require it, but they do anyways. This is _well-documented_. Please stop telling people HDCP isn't always required for the PS3's HDMI output, because it definitely is, and in all cases.

I never said that it wasn't required or that I knew it wasn't required, I just said I've never heard of it being required and it wouldn't make any sense to require it. Thanks for the clarification.
