This is a pure speculations thread since 7990s are not out yet...

Do you think it is worth upgrading from 2x6990s to 2x7990s?
Due to cost, i will probably skip the 79xx series, since i have 2x6990s on water now, however this can be the "theoretical" thread of ultra performing cards...

Looking at 7970 thermal reviews, it seems that the thermal specs of 7990s would be simmilar to 6990s, so 2x7990s in one case would also need to be on water like 6990s... The stream proccessor bump by 33% is impressive, and in the ballpark of the die shrink.

I thought that it took a year from 6970 to 6990 release, the speculated date for 7990s in spring of this year is about 9 months sooner... Do you think 7990s will get pushed back? I suspect not, since AMD is not pushing any higher thermal envelope, so cooling/power solutions would be trivial for 7990 design.

What will the green team counter the 7990 with? Has Nvidia made any advance towards the 28nm? I really don't know, just asking. Doubt GTX680/690 will be able to keep up unless they succeed with the die shrink to 28nm...

Assuming that CF is working correctly, I cannot see two 6990's being too slow for much of anything. So I would not think it is worth upgrading, no. Two 6990's are probably already overkill for 1080P.

you are correct, there is no game that lags my 6990s. I do scientific computation on GPU though, so more power is always better. Currently get about 11TFLOPS, i am guesing with 2x7990s id get 30% more... This does make a difference if you have to wait for 10 days vs waiting for 6.66 days for simulation to complete.

I am also speculating that in the next 2 years GPGPU code will be found in many apps, some video encoding apps already use it now... GPGPU is the future.

If you are getting them for that reason then you should probably upgrade to Socket 2011 and PCI-E 3.0.

That is if your applications would benefit from extra bandwidth.
