I have a friend who bought a ton of computers and peripherals from a LAN center that just got liquidated. He wants to sell me either one or two HD6870x2 graphics cards for $100 each. If I want them that is.

Is it possible to crossfire them?

EDIT: What would the the performance of two 6870x2 crossfired be equal two? I know one is equal to or greater than a GTX580. I can't find any benchmarks comparing it to newer graphics cards.

When it scales easily better than GTX680 and 7970GHz. When everything works as it should it should be faster than GTX580 SLI and maybe 30% slower than 680SLI alas it's not always the case. Usually I recommend against multi-gpu set-ups until you can build one with the highest performance cards, but for 200$ it's just crazy amount of graphics performance.

What resolution do you game at? Even though the 6870X2 comes with 2GB of RAM it's split between each GPU, so only 1GB is really in use while gaming.

But that said... yes grab those badboys before your friend realizes what he's doing. :D

I'm going to be playing single monitor at 1920X1080. In the future I will get a larger resolution monitor, but not until prices come down. I am sure one 6870x2 will be plenty, but for $200 I couldn't pass it up.

I purchased them this morning before I came into work. Now I will just need to purchase an adaquate motherboard to support the crossfire. The motherboard I currently have only has (1)x16 and (1) x4 pcie slots.

6870 cf equals gtx 580. 6870 quad fire with great scaling will compare to a single 7970 ghz oc. When the scaling isn't great it would be limited to a stock 7950.
