Nice, are you overvolting for that? Because I've heard conflicting things about how possible it is to overvolt Sapphire 6850s, that TRIXX is unavailable for now, that Afterburner caps you at 850 even if you enable unofficial oc'ing, etc.

Stock volts using Afterburner. Ran Furmark, Heaven and Vantage with no artifacts. Fan speed is blasted up though. I still can't hear it over my dual Scythes...will get a fan controller soon.

I cant have someone beat me by 10mhz on the memory, so bumped mine up to 1150. :p

I got my 6870 a few days ago and I'm interested in overclocking. I hear MSI Afterburner and Kombuster are good programs to help me through the overclocking process.
This is my first time overclocking, so it would be nice to get some tips. Do I change core clock or memory clock first? How do I know that the clocks have reached their limit? In order to test maximum stability do I put the Kombuster settings as follows: render path(direct3D 11), stability test, width: 1920 height: 1080(that's my monitor resolution), fullscreen, 8xMSAA?
How long do I run the test? How will I know if it passed the test? What is the max temp the card can go to without damaging it?

My 6850 has been oced to 900/1100 at stock. I haven't found the ceiling yet and will oc more later.

On that Heaven benchmark i had an average of 33 frames running at 1920 x 1080.

A question about Ocing the 6850:

At stock speeds and in 2D mode, the stock clocks are 100/300 or something like that with low idel temp. I want to do a mild OC at like 850/1050 but you all know with Overdrive, in 2D mode after OC the clocks are higher...so is the idle temp.

My comp is running 24/7 all week long generally...if I OC my 6850 and keep the computer running 24/7 can this cause problems on the video card?

Before you overclock using 3rd parties, I suggest you to try using AMD's overdrive.

First increase your core clock, follow a step by step process:

Raise your core clock by 5Mhz.. and test it out using Kombustor or OCCT.. I prefer OCCT.

Raise your clocks incrementally until your card crashes and fall back to your previous stable clock frequency.

With OCCT how long should I test it for and how do I know if it fails?

I've been using the sapphire Trixx , 950 so far. This app was written by Whizzard at techPowUp, commercially for sapphire ...descent app btw.

Would like to see some before/after GAME benchmarks.

First, what is your goal of overclocking? If there any particular games you need better performance in?

If you are just doing it to show some kind of a score....IMO that's worthless.

Yeah trixx takes a lil getting used to. I have 4 profiles-1-Stock, 2-875/1100, 3-900/1100 , 4-950/1100. CCC overdrive must be enabled, you load a profile and then apply it.

Only problem is my benchmarks don't show much improvement at all between stock and + 175Mhz  I don't really understand... GPUz shows the changes are applied but I don't see the numbers scaling properly.:( if at all.

Hey guys, just need your opinions/advices on my OC.

I OCed my 6850 with MSIAfterburner to 850/1150.
I tested the OC with Kombustor(Furmark) for 15 minutes at 1920x1080/MSAA0x

My max temps are 87C.

Is it ok/normal temps for this kind of OC and how can I see if there's been errors in the process? I stayed in front of my screen the whole time and never saw any anomalies.

Should I test it with other programs like OCCT? What would you recommend?

Thanks!

Yes, OCCT is better. You need not have to sit in front of the screen.. it just throws up error(s) if your card is displaying artifacts.

And your temps are fine. you will not reach that kind of temps while playing.

Ok then count me in the OCed 6850!

Model: XFX HD6850
Stock speeds: 775/1000
Overclock: 850/1150
Tool(s): MSIAfterburner/MSIKombustor
Voltage: Stock
Fan: Auto

Ran 15 minutes of Kombustor at 1920x1080/MSAA0x and played FalloutNV 15 minutes with no artefacts. Gonna test it further but for now it's stable!

Trixx is awesome! It fixes the main problem I've had with Radeon drivers since 10.4 when I was still using the 5770. Without Trixx, the Memory clock revs up to maximum values while idle if you checked off ATI Overdrive, which increases temperatures and fan speed. With Trix, the Mem clock stays super low when idle and only increases the speeds when it needs to.

840/1080 on both 6850 CF cards.

1370 pts 35 avg min 55 avg 128 fps max on heaven 1080p/16AF/0AA/Norm Tess/

1170 pts 45 fps avg 30 min same settings w/ 4AA. Pretty impressive

Is furmark a good program to test unstability or should I look at a different program?

Crysis ran pretty good. But I'm still having issues with the last lvl, even with my 5770 CF before "sigh"

Nice.

TRIXX + GPU-Z (there is a new version out that fixes 68xx memory clock reporting) does almost everything Afterburner does.

OCCT is better than Furmark, as it can catch non-visible errors.
