The article is saying AIB's are now starting to price the 5830 at $199, with overcocked 5830's at $219....err...the general consensus is that at $199 the gtx460 192-bit is overall the better card, and at $219 the gtx460 256-bit is still a better card than overclocked 5830's. In other words, the price cuts should probably be deeper.

gtx470's have been taking some big price cuts too. The cheapest gtx470 on newegg is an evga for $295 with a $25 MIR. The cheapest hd5850 is an xfx but still $290. So while the gtx470 has trade offs of extra power consumption and noise vs. the hd5850, you get a better performing card for less money after the MIR.

TigerDirect.com GTX470 deal for the win! Picked up 2 GTX470s for $400 with shipping (subject to Bing cashback though). At $200, GTX470 just hit the sweet spot even though I would have much preferred to get a $200 5850.

If you consider overclocking, then a GTX460 at $230 is still a better deal than the 5830 at $200 because at 850 mhz on the GPU, it matches a GTX470. 5830 is neutered by 16 ROPs. The overclocking is worth the extra $30 imo.

But I have seen 5830s for $180 at the Egg. That makes them pretty good compared to $230 GTX460s, if you take overclocking out of the equation.

hehe You called me an Nvidia fanboy? I should sig this. I am not a fanboy of either brand. I am a fanboy of price/performance. I guess I am a fanboy for selling my 4890 and getting a 470 for little $ out of pocket when a 5850 is $90 more? hmm...

I was recommending 5770s/5850s/5870s for 9 months. 9! And what card did I have since last summer? ATI 4890. My first videocard ever, Radeon 8500 ^_^ Over the years I recommended 9800Pro over 5900XT, X1800/1950XT over 7800/7950GT, 4870 over GTX260, etc.

I am fully aware that a 5870 is better than a GTX470 when comparing performance, efficiency per clock cycle, noise levels, power consumption. The problem is the cheapest 5870 I can find right now is $370-380.

Just got the HD 5830 last week from Newegg for $199. Works great! It replaced my SLI 9800GT setup.

Ironic to be posting this in a 5830 thread, since the 5830 is the power-sucking lemon of the 58xx series, a rejected chip that failed to be good enough to become a 5850.

Very good cards: 5770, GTX 460, 5850, 5870

OK cards: GTX 470, GTX 480

Lemons, rejects, failures as GPUs, not even their mothers like them: 5830, GTX 465

very close but, price wise?

5770, gtx 460, gtx 470, 5850 = very good cards

ok cards? gtx 480 (they are 440$ now), 5870 390$, 5830 $199

250$ FOR A GTX 465 is crap...
700$ for a 5970 is borderline crap, but it is the fastest card.

^ I was weighing more the power, heat and noise that it costs for the performance than the current pricing of the 5850, 70 and GTX 480.

I'm expecting that ATI and nV will both be re-pricing their top cards now that the 460 is out and performs so well.

Radeon 5830 can definitely compete with the GTX 460 768MB, but most people should be able to justify another $30 for the GTX 460 1GB. Much like no buys a Radeon 5750 when the 5770 is like $20 more.

I think amd need to drop 5850 prices as well, that 460 1gb is like 85% fps of 5850 while one is 230ish other is still 300. they need to drop 5850 to $270ish to compensate for this increased competition.

I doubt AMD will drop the price of the 5850 back to the launch MSRP but a decent drop is warranted at this time.

460 1gb is more like 92% of a 5850. Once OCd hard the 5850 will pull away, but stock vs stock (and especially with 800-820 mhz stock 460s) you won't be able to tell which card is in the machine without opening Control Panel.

That said, for around $200 the 470 is a screaming deal. Yes, it's louder, hotter and will use more power than a 5850. But for about $70 less the drawbacks are easy to overlook.

AMD will drop prices only when they detect an inventory problem. Since I can't see why anyone would pay a large premium for an AMD card with slightly better performing NV cards being cheaper that might happen in a month or two, tops.

I noticed the same thing.

The 5830 should be around $185. The 57XX needs to drop a bit as well. The 460 was generally a little faster than the 5830 so the prices should better reflect.

I don't know why the 5850 price would drop, it was consistantly faster than the 460.

It's nice to see nVidia step up with a excellent product, especially in the price range I'm most interested in. Not that I'm in the market for it but I wonder when they will release their low end.

that, my friend, is true wisdom. Now I see why you're an elite member!

I would almost rather use my geforce 2 gts than a 5830 or gtx 465.

edit: @happy medium: the 5830 is actually a $125 card that has been nearly twice that for way too long. $175 is too much for a card that can't even touch $150 cards from last gen.
