This report says Hynix introduced 7 Gpbs GDDR5 almost a year ago.

1120 stream processors seems rather "GPU heavy" for 128-bit bus unless ATI is planning to use these ICs eventually.

Hynix introduces 1Gb GDDR5 DRAM

Press release, November 15; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Thursday 15 November 2007]

Hynix Semiconductor today introduced its 1Gb GDDR5 graphics DRAM, with the component being fabricated on the company's 66nm process. Mass production of GDDR5 is planned for the first half of 2008, the company stated.

Hynix's GDDR5 operates at a 5Gbps bandwidth and processes up to 20GB of data per second with a 32-bit I/O, which makes it ideal in applications with high-definition video and cinematic and photo-realistic graphics content, according to Hynix.

In addition to its small form factor and power saving characteristics, Hynix's GDDR5 features time delay adjustments, error correction and jitter control technology enabling more robust system designs, stated the company.

The fifth-generation graphics memory GDDR5 improves data processing speed by more than two times than that of GDDR3, the current mainstream graphics DRAM device. With its improved speed and power characteristics, GDDR5 is projected to succeed GDDR3 and dominate the graphics DRAM market from the second half of 2008

I think ATI will hold off on using 7 Gbps memory until Nvidia has some midrange competition for them.

Maybe a video card with a small die/7 Gbps memory will be cheaper to produce than one with a larger die and 5 Gbps memory?

If this is true then building 1120 stream processors/128 bit on 180mm2 may make more sense than using the same die space for 800 stream processors/256 bit right?

Looks like ATI is counting on DX11 and lower power use being the selling points of these midrange cards. I'd be surprised if they match 4870 performance, let alone 4890 once FSAA is on. Should be just as zippy at 1680x1050 with no FSAA of course.

Like the 1600XT and 8600GT era it I'm starting to think this generations mainstream parts are cut down a bit too far. I can't see spending $150-200 to upgrade from a 4770/4850 or even 8800/9800/250GT to one of these.

Wow, these are slower than I thought. The 5750 is only one step faster than a 4770 really, which is disappointing. The 4890 will beat the 5770 in 100% of tests, most likely.

I guess these are aimed for people with cards slower than 8800GT. No one with a 4850 would even consider one of these.

THe fuck? The power connector is in air duct?

ATI is retarded! Put it on top like an nvidia card!

I take it you haven't seen the 5850 then Stoneburner? It has TWO power connectors in the "air duct"

And those things really aren't air ducts, AMD even admitted that they are there mostly because "they look cool."

I just saw that actually. Air ducts or not, I'd rather they not be filled with power connectors, and I'd rather the power connectors be on top like the 5870 and nvidia cards so they can fit in certain cases. I hope the 5700's are no longer than the 4770's because the 4770's barely fit in my HTPC case BECAUSE of the damn power connector.

Dude, the 4890 is way slower than the 5870! Hell, the 5850 beats it!

he clearly meant to say 5770 not 5870.

Well at least the prices on these 800 sp/720p models are cheaper.

I wonder how they will overclock and/or compare to HD48xx?

If bandwidth is an issue at this level then maybe Hd5750 becomes the best value (especially if an ASUS Voltage tweak model gets released)

I'll admit, I liked the top-side power connectors that were on the 2900XT and I like top-side power connectors on my 5870 too. That position just makes it easier to plug unplug power cables.

However doing that does violate slot height. And a video card with power connectors on the top of the card won't fit in my HTPC case...

well... hope that a 5770 will perform as fast as the 4890 or even faster... if not then i'd go for the 5850...
