Hd4870 problem

I have a tremendous slow down in frames after a period of time in particular areas. It is easily repeatable. All I have to do is hang around in a "specific" spot and within minutes FPS will tank. As soon as I notice the fps tanking I reload my graphic settings. You can do this easily without exiting the game or changing anything by going in to the game option menu by hitting escape during play. Then go into the video settings and change your aspect ratio from whatever ratio it is at to auto and hit apply.
Game runs flawlessly for an unspecified amount of time and then will tank into the upper teens. But get this it only happens when I face a certain direction or certain objects. My GPU is not overheating and it is not overclocked I have the fan speed bumped up to 50% and temps never go over 50c. I can repeat this everytime in certain areas of the game if I play a level to a certain point. All I have to do to get my Fps back up to where they should be is reload the grapics settings in the game by the method previously described. I just switch back and forth between 16/10 and auto. I believe the hd4870 my have a memory leak in cod4 and certain areas of the game with 8xAA are hitting a frame buffer limit, and I have to "clear" out the memory by reloading the settings.

When the frames chug, I can turn around and shoot, run, blow stuff up, whatever and everything is good. The second I face the other way my fps tank even if I'm facing a wall.

This only happens under 8XAA, not with anything less.

Can anybody else repeat this? I'm on vista 64, cod 4 patched to 1.7, official 8.7(happend with betas aswell).

Although it's not COD4, I have this same problem in ETQW when running a certain timedemo (Canyon level), that I made, with my HD4870 (WinXP Pro x86)

I run at 1600x1200, 8xAA/16xAF, all in-game details on high. Catalyst 8.6 Final, 8.6 Hotfix, and 8.7 Final all exhibit this error.

The timedemo will run as fast as possible for about 2/3's of the length and then towards the end it chugs down to <1fps, and I am forced to just exit the game.

Lowering AA to 4x or lower results in normal performance without the slowdown mentioned above.

Since I don't run at 8xAA/16xAF, this isn't too big a concern for me, but it is a bit odd.

I experienced this in WoW as well. I could be chugging along in 60fps then turn one way and they would tank down to 34-45. This is on a q6600 and HD4500. Im running at 1900x1200 resolution...i think thats what it is. The way I fixed it was turn the aa from box to edge detect i think it was in the ccc and wow runs at a constant 60fps.
