HD4870 dieing...equivalent replacement?

Hi

I think my 1GB HD4870 is on its last legs. I'm looking more for a budget card with same performance and after looking at benches on this site, it would seem the HD6850 is the closest in performance but still faster. I'm looking in the $100cdn price range and the cheapest 6850's I've come across are in the $130 range after MIR. (here and here)
I would be willing to purchase one of these cards for the higher price but I've been screwed before for buying the cheapest videocard of a specific model and would like to avoid this problem.

Two questions:
1. Are the two linked cards a good deal or am I missing the catch. (Good Companies to buy from? Clearing old stock?)
2. Is there something else (AMD or Nvidia) for less but with similar performance to my 4870?

FYI
I game at 1920x1080 and haven't run into any major slowdowns in the games I play.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks

since when is the 5750 faster overall than a 4870? I thought in most cass even the 5770 was slower than a 4870.

The 6770 would be the current model with the most similar performance. All cards overclock. Some more than others, which is why it's silly to buy a card counting on it O/C'ing to the next models performance. I'm sure your 4870 can O/C too. Typically an O/C'd 5750 won't match an O/C'd 4870, where the 6770 likely will. This is assuming avg. O/C'ing abilities on all of the cards.

The 5770 is virtually identical to the 6770. Get which ever one is cheaper.

any 5750 or gts 450 will eaasily overclock past a 4870 speeds and give better image quality.

Overclock a loud/powerhungry 4870 if you dare to compare.

^The answer to this question is the 6770. I'm not sure why you're dancing all around it. Since you want to mention power hungry, which we weren't even on to that, all cards get power hungry when you O/C them. A stock 6770 will be the same performance with the least power draw. Why all of the high brow talk about O/C'ing? Just simply answer the OP's question.

6770 would be the minimum card to get equivalent performance.

Going with a card that is slower than what he had and banking on being able to achieve a good OC is certainly an option the OP could explore, but it's also not what he asked.

Seems like these are the options you are looking at (unless you want to try the overclocking a cheaper card, route):

@ newegg

6750 $85cdn
6770 $110cdn - $15usd MIR
6790 $130cdn - $15usd MIR
6850 $150cdn - $20usd MIR

If it were my money, I would try for the 6850. I think it's $35 better than a 6770. But if budget is of primary concern, you might just try for the overclocking method happy medium suggested. Also note that the 6790 is Barts, not Juniper like the lower 67xx's.

Thanks for the replies. I have never had any luck with overclocking videocards and is not something I'm willing to bet on to achieve the same performance. I do appreciate the suggestion though. So it's decided that 6770 would be similar to my 4870 but try for a 6850 if I can find a good deal? Any name I should be looking for or avoiding? I have had problems with XFX in the past but maybe it was just me.

Thanks

Going from 4870 to 6850 is a reasonable upgrade as long as you keep MSAA off and don't play BF3. If you find that the 6850 is above your budget, I'd stick with the 4870 for as long as you can until the 28nm cards are out. Anything less than the 6850 will only be a sidegrade.

I just bought a Saphire 6850 to replace a 4850.....it's a ton more powerful, 10x quieter and doesn't get hot under load.

Forgot to mention that newegg charges and arm and a leg for S&H to Canada. Add ~$12 to the price of the cards I mentioned above. :(

In any case, as others have said, it might be worth your while to wait with the 4870 until the 7xxx's come out (if you can). Those cards could significantly outperform any of the cards we've been talking about at your price point, or they could drive down the prices of the 6xxx's.

BTW, anecdotal, but my 5770 outperforms my friend's 4890 in BFBC2. So a 6770 (same card) might be a small upgrade for you. However my 5770 is showing it's age, no doubt.

As far as card makers go, I think they are all basically the same. I've had a good Powercolor card, and a crap Powercolor card. The 5770 I have is HIS. It's been super solid, but can't overclock at all.

Yeah, that's where I got all the pricing and S&H from, newegg.ca. I assume Canada is shipped to from the New Jersey facility (maybe from the California warehouse for western Canada)?

Newegg has a Warehouse in Mississauga, Ontario

Being on east coast, I still get stuff from NJ sometimes. My most recent build below everything came from Ontario except the video cards, which came from New Jersey

Keep in mind, newer cards support the more graphically demanding DX11 (with higher quality graphics too). So while in theory HD6770 is as fast as an HD4870, unless you start manually forcing DX9/10 in games, it'll actually run slower due to most DX11 code path/graphical settings actually being more intensive. I wouldn't get anything less than an HD6850/GTX460 in your case.

If you are willing to overclock, this MSI GTX460 Hawk is a good card for $135 CDN. If you must stay at $100, I'd probably rather go with the GTX460 768mb than an HD6770. It's $20-30 extra for an HD6850 over the 6770. Well worth the extra cost imho.

I would buy a 5850 off ebay or For sale.

I seriously got one recently for $95 off ebay in an auction that ended at a dumb time.

This thread seems to answer the question I was looking for as well. I've been running my Sapphire 4870 512mb for several years. It's at least a year or so older than the rest of my system. I plan to give Star Wars a try when it comes out and I had been wondering if the time was right to upgrade my vid card.

I bought a 80GB SSD on Cyber Monday, and just recently ordered another 8GB ram. Sounds like I'll be good for another year or so with those 2 upgrades, plus finding the time to OC my CPU.

Some system specs:
i5 750 - stock speeds since i've been too lazy to OC it.
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
Cooler Master Hyper 212 - for when I finally get around to OC'ing
SeaSonic X Series X650 Gold
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
