HD4870 1GB or GTX 269 Core 216 for HTPC?

I'm putting together an HTPC/gaming system running an E8500, 4GB DDR2, on a mATX board. I'm currently trying to choose between a HD4870 1gig, and a GTX 260 Core 216 (they're both in the $170ish range) for my graphics card... any advice is welcome.

The HD 4870 should be better in terms of performance than the GeForce 260 Core 216 but it will be noisier and hotter too. However, if you can get a HD 4870 based on a non-reference design like mine then things should be okay for you.

Which ever is cheaper. You would never notice a performance difference between the two.

They are pretty much on par but he GTX 260 overclocks much better than 4870.

4890 is another story.

Here it is, buddy... Overclocked, silent and more powerful than a stock HD 4890.

Here it is, buddy... Overclocked, silent and more powerful than a stock HD 4890.

You could have just said what card model you have, instead of showing off your system. I don't think he is interested in what else your have in your computer or how your room looks like.

You could have just said what card model you have, instead of showing off your system. I don't think he is interested in what else your have in your computer or how your room looks like.

It's not about showing off, mate. I simply wanted him to have a look at the benchmarking results, the analysis of the acoustics and thermal management because instead of taking all the time to write everything here, I just gave him the link so that he could have a better and concrete idea about his query based on results, not just opinions.

The HD 4870 has better video features and acceleration, but both cards are a little of a power hog for a HTPC wouldn't you think? If you own both cards, I recommend the HD 4870, if don't, the HD 4770 would be a nice card, good performance and low power consumption for a tempting price.
