HD4830 1GB (MSI)

If I was going to play at a resolution that required 1GB of VRAM, I would spend more money on a faster card.
 
I'm looking for real data guys, not conjecture. Do either of you own the card? Links would be great. I haven't been able to find much on Google.
 
every time they do it, they put a ton of ram on a weak GPU and sell it to people who don't know any better...
 
And usually it's GDDR2. There's some formula that tells how much Vram you need depending on the # of megapixels that your trying to push. I don't know it off hand, but Google or some smarter member might.
 
Usually with lots of AA any game can take up more than 512mb vram.

There's couple of games where 1gb is actually useful in 1920x even with no AA or only 4xAA. Here's a couple on top of my head. Oblivion, Fallout 3, GTA4, WIC.

For most part it's not worth the premium unless the difference was minuscule. ATI usually have better memory management than Nvidia cards where these settings wouldn't matter much. This is so prevalent when GTX295 vs 4870x2 @ 2560x1600. Nvidia chokes even with 896mb of vram @ 2560x.

That's for two cores. With the 295 and 4870X2, each GPU only has 896MB and 1GB RAM, respectively.

As for the original topic, I don't see the point in getting a 1GB 4830. Newegg's got a 4850 for the same price as that 1GB 4830, and I'd rather have more processing/shader power than VRAM at this level of performance. I wouldn't worry about having more than 512MB RAM until you're in 4870/GTX260 territory, as anything weaker usually won't be able to handle higher resolutions too well even with excess VRAM.

It's a trade off. Once has more processing power while other had more vram for higher level of AA and resolution.

Clock for clock 4830 isn't too far off from 4850. Perhaps less than 5%. Both come from RV770 core so they overclock very similarly.
 
I was trying to show that you can still have limitations in video memory over 512mb at mid-range resolutions if you use enough AA. the gtx295 and 4870x2 were examples to show how they get slow from processing large ammounts of texture & data.

Those are really extreme examples & rare occasions. A 512mb 4850 should be suitable for all games at 1680 or 1920 with 2x, 4x, and sometimes 8xAA.

yeah but you worded to say that the 4870x2 had 2gb of usable ram and the gtx295 had 1792mb when in fact they only have half of that to actually use.
 
Off topic but I was just at Best buy a few mins ago and they had a 9800GTX+ 1 gig for like $180. Didn't even know they had a 1 gig version

I think jared knows 4870x2 is 2x 1 gig frame buffer card that behave like 1 gig card considering this kind of info is ancient news. Some people like to take things literally.

I don't know about the 4830, but I remember seeing a review of the 4850 that had 1GB of memory. Generally the 4870 with 512MB was faster. My guess is the 4870 was fast enough of a GPU to utilize the extra memory, and the extra bandwidth helped it. If the 4850 wasn't powerful enough to use the extra memory, then a 4830 will have even less positive impact from the extra memory. I'll see if I can dig up the review...

*edit - Give this review a look. I'm not sure if this is the review I was looking for, but they do test a 4850 512MB and 4850 1GB. The performance difference is very small to non-existant. Considering that the 4830 is less powerful yet, I would imagine that the extra memory would provide even less benefit and simply not be worth any premium in cost over the 512 version.

well then I dont know what he was actually trying to say or prove by mentioning the total amount amount of ram on those cards then.
