You'd probably experience a bigger wow from a quad over a 4850, the 3870 is a good card still, not by far is it outdated.

Yeah but the thing is..the quad would be much more money.

200+100 mobo at least...and he'd want new ram too.

I've heard nothing but good things about the 4850. I'd say ebay the HD3870 for what...~120? and then 30 dollar upgrade AR= worth the difference

he can run an amd quad on that mobo, but it would still cost much more than the upgrade from 3870 to 4850. probably at least $100 after selling his "x2 3600 rules". besides, he'd need a new name if he got a new cpu...

What size screen? At 1280X1024 or 1680x1050 there won't be that much of an improvement. At 1920X1200 there will be a massive improvement in most games.

i think that he's cpu limited... i was very surprised at the improvement in framerates when i went from an am2 4800 @ 2.65 to an am2 6000 @ 3.2 (i have a cheap ecs mobo) with a 8800 640 oc'd to 630/1000... bigger cache and 550mhz/core was sure worth the $40 net it cost me...

maybe i'll stuff my 3870 in the am2 box to see how it runs...

what's your 3d06 score?

Will I see any worthwile differences with my current CPU.
Or should I go for quad core.

Which games do you play because I've noticed that with some games there is virtually no difference between the 3870 and 4850?

i play grid, cnc 3, crysis, cod4.
but crysis runs pretty bad and i want to be able to play it on high to very high. but on my current system, with settings at medium to high, i'm getting 10-20 fps in intense areas and 15-30 fps otherwise.

I am praying you are right dude. I just purchased my first 1920x1200 monitor and right now my frame rates suck with the 3870. My 4870 will be here in 2 days. :)

lower resolutions would essentially mean a lot of 'free' AA :p
