You have a friend that can test the card on there unit?

It could very well be the PSU, When gfx intensive moments come up the whole system puts a load on the PSU at once.
See if you can barrow a PSU or pull all extra add on hardware such as CDrom and USB devices and see if it helps any.

First of all, do you have the 6 pin connector hooked up to the Video Card????? Have you ran any component stability tests like Prime95, Memtest86, OCCT ??? Those will test your CPU and Memory. Test those to make sure your CPU & Memory are stable. Run Prime95 for atleast 4-6hrs and then Memtest86 run atleast 2 complete passes.

Ok, we need to know two things:

1) Is everything stable. There is a test called memtest86+. Google it. Download it and burn it to a CD. Restart your computer with the CD in and run the test for a day straight. You should not have ONE error.
Next, google prime95. Download and install it. Run it for 8 hours straight. The computer should still be alive at the end. Then google and download ATitool. Start it, it has a button called artifact test. Run that for a couple hours.
2) Does the card work? Have you tested it in another computer? Also, are you sure you have everything plugged in and your PSU is strong enough? Tell us the PSU model.

What exactly is your 3870 "crushing".

1. Is the 6 pin pci-e power connector actually hooked up at both ends (psu & card)?
2. Have you installed the latest ATI 8.5 drivers?
3. Did this card work fine in the past or has it always had problems?
4. Have u tried a clean format & reinstall of xp?
