HD woes :(

I am having problems formatting my 250GB 7200.8 Seagate to a big single partition or even to 2 smaller partitions.

I get a format unsuccessful error message but I still put stuff on it. It stops wanting to take stuff beyond 130-137GB. It gives me a DELAYED WRITE FAIL error. I don't think it is clicking at the time though. It is connected to an IDE PCI Controller. I have 2 more HD connected to the PCI IDE controller and they are all fine. I would have another connected but it won't reconise ANY of my HD on that secondary slave or whatever it is but it won't accept any HD's.

I have borrowed a PCI IDE controller off my friend so I will try that.

This is REALLY annoying me...🙁

Side note my mobo won't take the big HD's and format them properly also. I get the Delayed Write Fail error in windows after I have the HD filled to a certain size. The mobo has the latest BIOS update.

I have 6 HD in my machine (yeah I should get some bigger ones to get rid of the smaller 80 and 160GB ones). 5 of them work PERFECTLY but the 6th one doesn't want to play nice 🙁.

Any ideas guys? I will try the following:

-I'm going to swap the HD to a master instead of a slave and see if it will format nicely
-Put my the dodgy HD on to my friends PCI IDE controller in conjunction with my PCI IDE controller
-Move all HD's to my friends PCI IDE controller and not use mine

Thanks for any advice AT.

Hi, Make sure each cable is either Standard or Cable Select (CS). If you can't tell then try anything not working both ways. Master and Slave for standard and Both CS if Cable Select. Position on the CS cables determines witch is C: or D: Etc. Connectors are color coded. Luck, Jim

I bought rounded IDE cables when I thought it was a cable problem (had same problem but different HD). The cables are now labled master, slave. All HD's are on CS or set to Master/ Slave if they have the option.

Got 35mins before I can shut down my pc and move everything to my friends PCI IDE controller.

I just want to be able to use the dam HD that I paid for!

If none of this works I'll get an external USB2.0 HD box and see what that will do.

Thanks.

I went on to the Seagate website and d/l their program to setup the HD. It formatted the HD as a single big partition. I'll transfer stuff to it now and see if it works. Looks promising so fingers crossed!

What power supply are you using? I had 6 hard drives in my machine, and one would drop every once in a while, and it made doing heavy duty stuff a nightmare. I gave up on video editing and everything because of it for a while. Ended up being that I was over-using my PSU. Now I run dual PSUs along with an UPS, and I haven't had a problem since.

Hey do you think that would cause a Windows Delayed Write Failure?

I get this EVERYTIME when I fill the drive up to ~ 100GB 🙁

http://bermangraphics.com/problems/delayedwritefailure.htm

I'll go through that and see what I can do.

I have a pretty good Enermax 300Watt PSU though.

This is REALLY p!ssing me off.

At least I can format quickly with the Seagate tool program I d/l from their website. Still doesn't let me store more then 100GB to that drive though 🙁.

What all hardware do you have that is being powered by the Enermax 300w PSU. (And mine was an Enermax 460w, and then an Enermax 660w--finally went with dual together, and then migrated to a dual Seasonic 600w & 500w setup).

DVD-/+ RW
AGP 6800
Floppy Drive
I have another DVD ROM that isn't connected because I have 6 HD's and the DVD-/+ RW.

This Delayed Write Failed is really annoying. This is about the 4th HD that it has happened on 🙁. I swapped from WD to Seagate also to try and fix it but it doesn't seem to work. Next up is to switch the HD back to the onboard IDE controller and if that fails I'll switch all of my HD to a friends PCI IDE controller.

Thanks.

What CPU and how much RAM? Also, include as to how many (size & speed too if possible) fans you are running. I'm definitely thinking PSU though. Do you have another one that you could test to see if that is the problem?

P4 2.4 @ 2.699
1.5GB of ram (256x2; 512x2)

All fans are Panaflo running at max speed in my Asus black aluminum case.

No PSU to test out.

I'll stick the HD on the onboard IDE first then see what I get. Failing that I'll not connect up a HD and see if that works.

My system was FINE with 6 HD before and the DVD-/+RW. I took out the 80GB and put the 250GB in place and it won't save to the dam thing past 100GB.

I'm surprised that PSU hasn't thrown blue flames out the back and gone up in smoke! 6 HD, 1 Optical, 6800, OC'd CPU......I'm not 100% sure its your problem, but its under alot of strain. Try running with just one good drive and the problem drive to help eliminate the PSU.....

It is an Enermax one, not some cheapo no name brand one 😛

It was connected to the onboard IDE controller and I have just recently switched it to the PCI IDE controller and it has transfered a further 5GB. Before it wouldn't transfer this dam 170MB video clip! It has managed to do that. So FINGERS crossed it has worked and will work!

Hmmmm...I'm running out of power connectors. Now I need to get some splitters.

Even Enermax PSUs fail when you are maxing them out. I'd highly consider grabbing a 450w Fortron or something. I think an upgrade is in order. Nonetheless, running that much hd space, you'll want the extra padding the extra power offers.

maybe your controller card can't handle drives bigger than 137 GB? i know that's one of the limits they've gotten around in the last few years.

Yeah I should really 😛

It works now. Moved the HD from the onboard IDE controller to the PCI IDE controller and it works 🙂.

Thanks for everything.

wtf? Other 250GB doesn't appear on my system now 🙁

Man going to have to see if I can get that one back...

I have a 250GB HD on the controller card and it works.

Got that one back. Rigged it using my friends PCI IDE controller card.

But NOW my other 250GB drive isn't showing. I'll mess with it later. I'm taking a break from fixing it 😛

8hrs later I am done 🙂

Got my setup working. Still some RATHER funky problems. 6 HD's in the pc, 1 DVD RW. The Secondary Slave on the PCI IDE controller doesn't want to work...friends PCI IDE controller won't take more then 2 HD's on different channels. You can't have Master and Slave on his card...oh well I got 6 HD's working and that is all I want. I had some stuff delete off them 🙁 but I had most of that stuff backed up 🙂

I'll be waiting for the post a week from now saying the PSU blew and took out a whole bunch of stuff with it....seriously replace that thing ASAP!

The clear solution is to replace your PSU.
It would be good to replace your PSU before any of your drives are physically damaged.

[*]Typical reasons for hard drive failure
  • Power fluctuations (mechanical failure)
  • Overheating (mechanical failure)
  • Driver problems (buggy software)
  • Incorrect jumper settings (configuration failure)
  • Failed cable (configuration failure)

[*]Hard drive failure prevention
  • Use a good power supply (Power Supply 101)
  • Understanding Power Requirements
  • Obtain a UPS battery backup with undervoltage protection
  • Physically place drive in bottom slot with at least one open slot directly above, to assist heat dissipation
  • Rig a case fan to blow air directly over hard drive(s), to assist heat dissipation
  • Create a good data backup plan, which may include an external hard drive, additional drives in case, RAID 1, creating a partition or drive image, DVD copies, ...

Going to purchase a S12 500W on the good advice of ribbon13. IF this dies your dead!!!
