HD temp in Silent Drive enclosure....

Yup, I finally got mine (thanks LeoV! :D)

I decided to see how hot my drive would run in there, so I popped in my recently deceased :)() Quantum KA, and just sitting there idling and spinning (at full speed I assume) it gets like 37c.

The drive is Quantum's very first 7200rpm/udma66 drive.

I measured it by sticking in my thermal probe (almost paper thin) in between the top plate and the drive.......

The back plate isn't on, and there almost no airflow going by the drive.
The back of the drive is slighly warm to the touch (probably about 35c).

Assuming I put my working Quantum KA in the silent drive, do you guys think it'll be safe at those temps (even at say 42c)?

It's just hit 38.5c.
Assuming I pop in a working one, and it stays under 45c, will be HD be safe?

possibly... i'd check the HD spec sheets to see what hte max operating temp is first, though.

The operating temps for my drive which is the quantum KX is 150f/66c something like that :p
I was warning your about this silentdrive viperoni a while back, even tho these Quantum KA/KX run ice cold in the open, in these silentdrives they get pretty damn hot. My drive used to run 35f over ambient so if its 100 degrees in my case (summer time) +35f thats damn close to the max operating temprature.
I made some modifications to it...removed the label on the drive, then cut a pretty good size Pentium heatsink cut it in half, lapped that, acrtic silver between, then tie strapped it on, also put some small memory heatsinks tie strapped on the bottom HS. And then a 80mm intake fan blowing right over it. The plates remain only 2f over ambient, but its alot warmer inside still.

There actully alot things can go wrong mounting this silent drive too..alot of HD's have feet..and your freakin heat plates will sit on this plate not even touching the drive, some drives have a ridge the plates sit on this ridge hardly touching the drive also. And i've found my drive is also indented in the middle...the casing slops in, and with my maxtor HD theres screws sit each corners of the drives and all it does is touch that. Oh yeah and also other bitch is some drives have breather holes which means you can't put the plate flush against it cause then you'll cover this breather hole.
I've own this drive for a year now, and im pretty sure my drive has some permant damage to it, bad sectors, loss of files...is it worth the quietness?
Anyways i took some pics of my silentdrive decribing the many flaws and incorrect installations can happen, i think you'd be interested in it.

Gizzo, the max it got up to yesterday was 38.5c.....and that's just idling in there, with the back plate off.
Assuming it was accessing a lot more, I guess it would hit 45c....

BTW: how the heck did you fit a heatsink in there?????
and a fan?
I just ripped off the feet off the bottom, but the top also has tiny feet, but it looks to be contacting the plates okay....

I was thinking of cutting a hole in the front for a tiny 40mm fan, and letting the blow air into the enclosure and leave the back exposed.

Once I apply damping material to my case I dont think I'd be able to hear the noise...

Zuchini, I dont even have it yet :eek:, just plan on getting some :D

The stuff that Gizzo got it ultra thick, supposed to be really good.

well you could use dynomat, that b-quiet stuffs....theres a lotta other stuffs available.

But I saw a pic of Gizzo's stuff, and man, its THICK!!

I know what ya mean.
The BQuiet stuff is really thin, but Gizzo's may even be an inch thick.

An idea would be to use Gizzo's stuff (or stuff like it) where you can, then put bquiet everywhere else....

UPDATE ON THE HD TEMP: I've only hit 39c so far....am I safe?
Completely sealed off, no air getting inside, but the HD is accessing or anything, just spinning.

Another fact: Quantum states the operating temp of the drive is between 5 to 55c....
So if I hit a max of 45c then I'd begin to get worried.

Looks like I'm good to go! :D

Viperoni put your HD through a long defrag, HD tempratures really climb during defrags. About the HS theres about 3/4 of an inch of space to put it, i cut a socket HS in half put them sideways along the exposed heatplate and they stand about 2 inches tall, makes the bay ontop unusable. For 80mm fan blowing over it i used THIS I chopped this HD cooler so that i would just have the front brazel and mounts, and i changed the fan out with a Silencer 20dB fan, it blows in air over these HS keeping them only 2f over the case temp, that air goes directly in the path to my CPU cooler, which helped cool that down some and then right out the back. Also has a foam filter inside that helps to soak up some noise.

This B-Quiet stuff is an asphalt and rubbered based stuff which is exactly what dynamat is. This is what the call a "Mass Loader" which means it adds mass to a certain object to dampen vibrating resonating noise in like metal sheet panels. What im using is a "Sound Absorber" its meant for airborn sound that hits it and soaks it up like a sponge, thats why it needs to be thick. With this B-Quiet stuff for airborn sound, it will pretty much act like a sound barrier, it will just bounce right off of and echo within your case. Alot of ppl use this stuff for the wrong purpose, cause its not a sound absorber, it a vibration dampener!
I've done alot of research on finding some real kick ass acoustic foam, this stuff is truely amazing, the soaking power of it is just as powerful as 3 inch scoulped foam (eggcrate shape), the top layer is skinned so its real easy to clean up like for dust and sh1t, with exposed foam this would be a big pain, and this skinned top adds like 30 precent more soaking power, below that is just layer of open cell then closed cell foam, its also adhesive on one side. Due that its 1 inch thich kinda makes it not as flexable where to place it. But really all you need is to put it on your door, base, as much as you can on the brazel/faceplates and the front of the chassie, try and get a 360 view point from your sound problem spots, and close it off not air tight but so that it hits this foam atleast once in its bounce paths, a good trick sometimes is to take cardbord slap this stuff on it and hang it over trouble spots.

Hmm...so if I put a base layer of BQuiet on, then slap on some of that thick stuff everywhere else that I can, damm that would come close to making my case silent.

The wierdest part is that my Quantum KA still makes a slightly noticeable amount of noise even inside the enclosure....

The hgihest temp it ever got to was 39c just spinning....

i'll try to do the defrag test today....but with no files on the HD?

How about a surface scan?

Install Win ME or something on it just for fun, back in the days before my mod during idle the temp would be only +5-7f, then during defrags +25f! and this is measuring the plates not the internal temp..sizzle sizzle sizzle!

You could do that put a layer of b-quiet then this stuff...but thats really excessive. If your gonna use the B-quiet probably would be best behind the motherboard, on the drive cage, and around your fans with some 2 inch excess, mount your fan right ontop of this stuff, be like a little rubber anti vibration mount for it, maybe double the thickness in this area.

But really even my cheap 7237 case with its thin sheet metal the case doesn't resonate really any noise at all, i would think putting on the B-quiet would have very little effect. Just put your hand lightly on the case where you think theres resonating noise, that will show you its not worth it.

Gizzo, looks like all I'll need is the thick foamy stuff like you have in that case :D
I actually have my sensor sandwitched between the recess between the HD's top plates side and the plate of the silencer.
It gets pretty good contact IMO.
Damm SilentDrive put the power cable leadout on the wrong side though (bad thinking :()

you installed the cap on upside down right? Power wires and ribbons come out lined up properly on mine.

Gizzo, nevermind me, I just realized crack kills :Q :( :D
I pulled off the feet from the bottom of my drive, and it slides in okay, still a kinda tight fit.
I'll take off the top ones as well and see how it goes (hey, the drive doesn't have a warranty anyways :D)

Check out my pic hd_back3 i just added that you'll see that silentdrive badge is upside down, the manual that came with mine said to do it this way seemed wierd you think they would manufactor the label right side up.

I just got my AMD embossed silver badge stickers today looks sweet on my black on silver case!
