HD SMART Failure

Booted up the comp and it says I have that SMART has detected an HD faiulre, press F1 to continue. Press F1 and then i get a no boot disk error. I realzie the drive is dead, but does anyone have any experience here? if i hook it up as a slave drive will i be able to access any data on it?

WD 80gb 7200rpm 2mb cache.
 
is the drive making "normal operating"sounds?
if not, its probably dead dead and wont you wont be able to recover anything from it
unless the stuff is important enough to be sent to a data recovery center (but i think they charge mucho dinero...)
 
By the time SMART notices anything wrong, you are generally a long way up the creek... I had that happen about a month ago (i've been making do with an old laptop 6 gig drive since then, till i jumped on the maxtor 60gb deal)

After the initial fail i got it to boot up about 3 more times, though plain perseverance and a fast hand on the reset button, but it crashed again before i could get much data off. Taught me to backup more often...

That said, i've heard people talk about odd ideas like putting a dead drive in the fridge for a day and other strange stuff, but i doubt they actually help any!
 
Thanks for the input. It doesnt seem to be making any unuaual sounds. it spins up and intializes and all that just fine. i'm going to try to make one of those data lifeguard smart thingy checker floppy disks from the WD website and try to RMA it.
 
I had two drives die within about a 2 or 3 month span. My maxtor 80 GB did not make any strange noises, just wouldn't boot. I hooked it up as slave to anohter disc and was able to recover all my data.
On the other hand, my IBM 40 GB made a loud clicking noise. I actually thought it was my processor fan. I shut the pc down to inspect the fan. BIG mistake. By the time I discovered it was my hard drive, it was too late. I lost a little over 13 GB of data.

Just got my IBM in today fromn the RMA, hope this one doesn't let me down.

I have been able to "ressurect" a failing hd enough to get data off of it by rotating its position. It worked long enough to get what I needed off of it. I too have heard of the freezer effect.
