HD set at PIO in Win XP?!?! AMD system on Epox 8K7A

Running Win XP on Athlon 1200 with an Epox 8k7a mobo. The problem is my 40 gig deskstar harddrive is being detected as PIO and not UDMA 5.

I have one the first channel a seagate 80GB Barracuda IV and CDRW, and the second channel with the deskstar and a cdrom. Both harddrives are masters.

I've notice transfers between the harddrives are slow and using some simple test applications I see that the deskstar is not performing up to par. Then there are the drivers for the VIA part of the mobo which I've installed with no change. The IDE TOOL works to set the hd to UDMA 5 but I get errors transferring files between harddrives as well as slow downs when I empty the recycling bin.

Any help? Anyone who has corrected this similar problem?

XP has a sneaky little setting in disk properies "use DMA if available".
6 or more CRC errors and it auto resets to PIO to protect your data (without telling you)
your IDE busmasters, or prim/sec channels are not configured correctly, duplicated, or corrupt

go into safe mode and delete any dupes, and the offending IDE channel your HDD is on
reboot redetect and reset DMA
failing that you must do same for BM

Edit: Overclocking PCI bus will do same.
