HD Recognition

I just replaced the HD in my Uncle's machine... its a 30 GB WD. Anyway, I turned it on and it recognized it, then upon reboot it didn't recognize it at all and locked up during the IDE detection phase. I've tried unplugging unneeded devices resetting the bios, jumpers on the HD, changing cables, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
