Ok, so here's the deal, I'm looking for a new TV and while I really want HD, I found a Panasonic TH-42PWD8UK for $450. The only problem is it's EDTV and not HDTV. If I don't get this set I'll be getting a Panasonic 32" HD CRT set.

I really think it will be worth it for the form alone. Having a big ass plasma screen would be freaking awesome.

yea i always wondered.
does HDTV make that much of a difference ?
I'm still on my sony TRinitron and I dont have any complaints about it.
How much of an improvement will I see with an HDTV ?

also is that panasonic 42" plasma used ?

That means I'll either be stuck on a 32" CRT or I'll be spending another grand or so to get a flatscreen.

depends. if you're watching HDTV, get an HDTV. If you're watching dvds, the edtv will be fine.

Yes, yes I know.

That's why I'm asking this question.

Hell, I could sell it in a year and make a few hundred bucks.

So you'd rather have a 32" HDTV CRT set instead of a 42" EDTV Plasma?

HDTV looks substantially better. The question is, is that worth the extra money to you? To me it definitely is not.

I'm definitely going to buy it because of the price and the fact I could turn around and sell it.

Depends. If you have standard TV and a large dvd collection, then edtv is fine. If you expect to get and enjoy hdtv and buy HD-DVD and get a library of those, then go the HDTV route...

A couple people in this thread raised a good point about selling the EDTV, since you're getting such a good deal on it. Try it out for a few days and if it works for you, keep it. If you aren't impressed, sell it for a profit and upgrade.

Tweak, that isn't a lot of dough for a good display. It will still show movies and SD content stunningly.

Heck, I'd buy it just for a bedroom TV.

But the question of "is HD worth it?" IMHO it totally changes TV. It is that big of a leap forward in quality and "wow, looks like a window" Watching sports in HD is literally like being there.

Yeah, so I'm going to get the TV.

Just need to hear back from the seller.

Freaking sweet.

I thought HD was hype. I got one. I stand corrected. I can't wait until stupid Comcast shows up with my HD-DVR so I can catch the ESPN/ESPN2 games in HD too. People who aren't used to it have their jaws drop while watching a game in HD. I got a 32" LCD and it is great.

Yes HDTV is worth if especially if you like sports, movies, documentaries, and prime time TV. Some friends were over last weekend watching football and when I showed them the difference between the game on ESPN2 Standard and one of the HD games they were sold on HD. Now the advantage to the EDTV plasma is that it will probably look slightly better than a HDTV on regular channels. For $450 I would probably buy it if the unit was in good working condition and I didn't already have a HD LCD.

Also I've heard some bad things about the Panasonic HD CRT's and when I looked at them in the store the picture quality looked pretty crappy compared to the Samsung which is only a little bit more $$$.
