Low cost upgrade for the Stations, $75,000

Analog and Digital broadcast at once, analog won't die just fade away someday.

8 digital channels in one, multicasting, sports, news, or music from one station, you choose.

AM gets FM quality sound

FM gets near cd quality sound

NO drifting and noise.


Most stations will broadcast digital and analog versions for a long time. Some have even begun multicasting with talk on A and News on B.

I have satellite radio for it's range. I travel alot and like the fact that I never lose a station anywhere. HD Radio is a good idea, but I doubt it will make satellite radio go away, just like over the air HDTV will not make cable/satellite TV go away.

edit: not to mention satellite can offer unedited programming.



 
My brother has Satellite Radio built into his car and he also travels all the country. He loves that part but does miss not getting the shows he knows that are strictly local radio stations. I think satellite radio will remain a small niche. Most people just have to many other bills that they already pay for.

1. Local Phone Service
2. DSL
3. Satellite TV
4. Mobile Phone

I think that is enough for most people....
 
Satellite radio's attraction for me is not quality, but programming.

Terrestrial radio offers the same crap, over and over again. Satellite offers a great variety that includes many songs radio won't play. How many times yesterday did all the terrestrial stations around me play a Dream Theater song? For XM, it was at least 5.
 
HD radio will have the same limitations as FM. XM radio means never having to hear country music on my 600+ mile trips to NC. Satellite radio FTW!!!

There is also talk about charging people $1 a month for premium content. Since each station can broadcast up to 8 channels your favorite classic rock station could offer 8 different channels with different songs going at the same time.

$1 per month is only $12 per year, a lot cheaper then either XM or Sirius.


There would be only 2 or 3 stations I would be interested in here, so 3 x 8 equals 24 channels of MUSIC ONLY for $3 a month.


PS: I hope they choose this route.


PSS: To upgrade to Digital will only cost each station $75,000 which is pretty low compared to launching satellites into space.
 
The new radios will probably be expensive for a long time and it will take a while for the stations to convert, meanwhile you can get satellite right now, only downside is they charge you extra for each receiver, for example if you wanted to have one in your car and house.

I doubt you can consider it a niche LOL Sirius has 3+ million users and XM has 5+ million. This is expected to top 15+ million combined by next year.
 
Digital TV sucks for fringe areas, and I would imagine that digital FM broadcast will too. Besides, FM broad cast is really good.
 
Terrestrial radio sucks, and will continue to suck, except for a select few independent stations. Distribution methods will not change that fact.

Don't hold your breath for that service!!! It may only cost 75k to go HD, but that doesn't include the cost of the new studios they will need, or the new saleries they will now have to pay. Let's not forget the advertizing cost. At $12 a year, a station will need an awful lot of subs to turn a profit.

When they reach 100 million then they will be mainstream. I do consider 8 million as niche when you think how many standard radios are out there in the country.

 
When I was shopping for a Sirius-ready receiver, I opted to get one that was HD Radio-ready as well. Figured it would be a while before stations would broadcast in HD but I was intrigued enough to get a capable receiver. I checked the coverage for my area and no one is using that technology yet.

I don't think it will have any affect on satellite radio. People that get XM/Sirius don't do so because of the sound quality. They do it for the variety, lack of commericials and consistent coverage across the country for traveling. HD radio isn't going eliminate those desires. It will simply produce a better sound to the station that satellite radio subscribers departed from anyway.

They cost the same price they always costed. You can buy a new car stereo today that has the HD and loads more will be out in 2006. When you buy a new Home Theater reciever it will have HD Radio built in. I'm sure they will have affordable addons for people with high end gear.

My city has 50 radio stations already signed up and 29 are already broadcasting. There are 5 stations doing multicasting.

HD radio will be cheaper and faster to launch then satellite radio.

If your in Las Vegas you can't listen to a New York radio Station in a car, maybe over the web in a hotel room but not driving in the car.

HD and normal radio wouldn't solve it either... so it's not a limitation of just Satellite radio.
 
Do people forget that HD Radio will still have commercials? All of XMs music stations are commercial free. That is what I am paying for. If HD Radio music stations also turn commercial free, then they will compete for my dollar. Lets say right now they don't change what they do now. If the only advantage is I can hear the same 97.9 radio station 100 miles more than I could now, who cares? I have XM so I don't have to put up with commercials when listening to my music.

Just a thought that no one else brought up.

Yeah, the music will still be heavily influenced by the music industry, and talk radio would be under federal regulations as well.

What studios, what salaries, what advertising ? One station here is going to keep there main station the way it is and multicast music on the others. No extra studios or salaries.

That's a great point, and one of several reasons I subscribe to XM as well.

I'd like to hear surround broadcasts.
That would rock.
I'd have to buy a center channel for my car.

Obviously, HD Radio may have some other attractive advantages after its release, but the way I see it, satellite radio is the way to go. Doesn't matter if you have Sirius or XM in my mind. My parents have Sirius and I have XM, and both are awesome.
 
HD Radio will have the same pitfalls as regular broadcast radio. All advertiser driven, maybe more if they have to pay to float 8 different types of content over 1 channel, and limitations to a city or region for the HD stations, plus you'll have a new problem: millions of cars with FM radio, and no way to change them except an ADDITIONAL radio. It will be nowhere close to holding a stick to Satellite radio. Its too late for terrestrial radio.
