HD Question! on Sony Wega!

waggy

No Lifer
OK my dad is looking to buy a Sony wega TV. he went to Sears and the guy is pushing hard on the extended warranty. He is claiming the "tube" has to be replaced every 2 years at $500 each and that th warranty covers it.

kinda in a hurry on this! thanks!

Don't buy the plan. Here is is a hint, the reason someone is pushing an extended warranty plan on you so hard is because those things are 100% margin. In retail, on most stuff, you get to make only 2%-5% margin.

yeah we know that. just wondering about the "tube"? does it need replaced every 2 years? thought it was t he bulb and it was every 5 or so

If it's an A10 series they are nice LCD RPTVs.

Yes a light bulb inside does need to be replaced every few years but you don't need a maintenance tech to do it and it costs less than their extended warranty.

If he pays with a platinum Visa or MC he gets double warranty for free.

sony GW = LCD projection = no tube ... bulb has advertised life of 8000hrs on the GWIII...it will be well beyond 2 years before it needs to be replaced.

thats what i figured. just wanted to make sure before i tell him something else.

thanks guys! i love AT heh so many people here you can get info fast!

my GWIII is over two years old...i estimate that it has about 5000hrs on it and its still going strong. by the time you need to replace the bulb, the price will be down below 200.00

I hate that so much. At first they tell you how great of a product it is and how it's the best quality, then when you decide to buy it they tell you that they often break down, so you better get the warranty

yeah i would do that.

but my dad busted the guy on his lie then talked to managment. getting free shipping! hehe

If the tubes need replaced every 2 years. then you need to find a better made product. Besides, sony probably forces their DRM into your brain so you cant talk about anything seen on their TV to..uh.. prevent lost profits

whoa! damn they install a rootkit on the brain! good thing its for my dad! his brain is already wasted from living in the 60s!

that could be the best line i have heard to buy the warranty. Do you even think sony would come out with a product like that if that was the case? Imagine how much money sony would lose to have to replace the tube every 2 years.

I bought the extended warranty on my Sony Wega 42A10. It was $330 I think. With the problems with the light engine in the last generation going out after 18 months ($1800 to fix) and the bulbs I figured it was worth it. The warranty is for 5 years so the bulb is going to go out at least once in that time.

1) Extended warranties are for suckers.
2) Don't buy Sony, 2 years is probably longer than the average their junk lasts. Get a good brand instead.
