I have used both the Maxtor 40 gig and the Barracuda IV 60 gig. I see no real world difference in performance between the two though the Maxtor is supposed to be faster. I like the construction of the Seagate better and I think it is quieter. My vote is the Seagate.

I swear by seagate. Never had a problem with em. I have a PC with a Seagate and a Maxtor, The pc tipped over and slammed about 2 feet to a cement floor while in operation. The seagate lived, the Maxtor died instantly.

I have both in my system. I have an old Seagate 6.5, a new Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB, and a Maxtor 20GB. Both makers have been very reliable for me. My new Seagate is my fastest drive, but that's because it's new, and the platter density is much higher.

Seagate HANDS DOWN!!

I will never buy another Maxtor in my lifetime.
In fact, I won't ever recommend anyone buy Maxtor in my lifetime!!

I bought a 6.4gb Maxtor HDD 4 years ago, and I have had it crash 8 times in 4 years.
I have to keep everything well backed up to keep from losing it all.
I have to hand it to their "No Quibble" guarentee, because each time I have returned it, it is very prompt (2 day air) and they keep getting bigger. I started with a 6.4gb and now I'm up to a 15gb, with no cost to me, other than shipping to return the drive every 6 months!

I finally broke down and bought a 80gb Seagate Barracuda, and I have loved it to pieces. It has never given me a problem at all. It is absolutely silent. Can't even hear it accessing the drive, let alone hear it spin. I've had it for almost 8 months now, and no issues at all. Runs like a champ! Definately go for Seagate! If not Seagate maybe IBM?

I would advise everyone to STAY FAR AWAY from Maxtor!

i ave 2 maxtors and ive never had any problims with them. 1 is a year old the other is 2 years old nop crashing problims or anything. only had to reformat once and that was Win 98s fault. Personlly i like maxtors but figured id save a few $$$ and get the seagate. i dont care about how loud it is my case will drown out any HD spin up.

as for IBM i wouldent take one of there drives if someone gave it to me. they are crap and everyone ele thinks there crap also

I`ve had every brand of HD except Seagate, and none have ever failed me(I must be lucky :)) anyway my current Maxtor D740X is a good solid HD , the bottom line is Maxtor make good HDs & they are also one of the top brands, their customer support is fast & excellent.

<< would advise everyone to STAY FAR AWAY from Maxtor! >>

My advise is the opposite.

Since the days of Conner, I have used Maxtor's with only one bad drive and it was a very used drive. It developed the ping of death and I sent it back and got a replacement and the replacement is still running in my friends system. I use to really like Seagates though, and their failure rates are probably very similar.

Been a long time, but I think the reason I switched was that Seagates and Conners didn't like to coexist and that put both of them on my compatibility list. Otherwise I am sure I would still be using Seagate.

Also if you get a Seagate, I don't think I would recommend dropping it and your computer two feet to concrete to see if its a good one..........:D j/k Oyeve

I'd get whatever is cheaper (seagate in this case). In reality, I don't think that there is much difference as far as reliability, noise, and performance go. Sure, some people are always going to have bad experiences with certain companies, but I think that is more a matter of chance then one company being inherently better than another.

IIRC, the Maxtor D740X is ATA133 & the Seagate Barracuda IV is ATA100 - if that makes any difference to you.

Dont listen to anyone who's telling you they've had some Maxtor or Seagate die on them 3 or 5 years ago. Those advice are completely irrelevent today. Both brands are exceptionally good in quality and reliability today. Since Maxtor acquired Quantum, they've been on a roll. Seagate, although not striving for speed, excels in acoustics. It really depends on what you're looking for. The Maxtor D740X is currently the best IDE drive to handle server situations, and the CudaIV is currently one of the quietest 7200rpm hard drives. Both drives perform similarly in transfer rates, but the D740X is far ahead in access times, it's not as quiet as the CudaIV, but still very quiet. As long as you don't get suckered into one of those IBMs, you're gonna be fine.

im smart enuff not to go with IBM. i ordered the seagate 83$ with shippin from newegg not bad for the 40 gig 7200 RPM. just got it because its cheeper. noise as i said isnt a problim and slightly slower then teh Maxtor isnt a big deal sene this will be my 3rd HD just throwin mad amounts of data on for storage. My mobo only supports ATA 100. but i just realized my promsce IDE card is 133 o well not that big of a deal for me

Don't buy a Seagate if you plan using it on (pseudo) IDE-RAID controller in RAID mode. If you don't plan to make RAID, then it's very good drive, IMO.
