HD problems - still having problems

I have 2 HDs - a maxtor 80GB and an IBM 60GXP 40GB. The Maxtor is currently the primary master and the IBM was the slave. I turned my computer off to change some LEDs and when I powered it back on it wouldn't detect either drive. I changed the LEDs back and still same problem, so I don't think the LEDs had anything to do with it. If I connect either drive to the cable but not both, they detect just fine. It's only when I put both of them on that I get trouble. Any ideas? I'm using an Asus a7m266, btw.

OK, n/m I fixed the problem. I booted into windows and found that all of my folder icons in explorer were just missing. Did a search on the knowledge base and found that this can happen if your primary drive is not C. Mine was F, so I ran a command they listed and it fixed the folder problem. Powered down, added my 2nd drive, and everything was fine. I really need to do I reformat so that my main drive is C and not F. This is starting to cause problems.

Apparently I didn't fix the problem. Now the IBM isn't being detected no matter what, and the maxtor isn't even being detected when both drives are plugged in. What is going on here?

EDIT: I suppose it's also worth mentioning that all of my icons keep disappearing in windows explorer. I checked the knowledge base and it says this is a known issue when your primary drive is something other than C: (mine is F) I ran their suggested fix which restored the icons but they keep disappearing.

Well both drives pass a DFT, so I am going to assume that the drives themselves are not to blame. Hankysmoo, can the fact that my drives are set up somewhat strange (primary drive F, secondary drive C) be affecting whether or not the drives get detected by the BIOS?

UPDATE: I tried hooking up a CDROM to primary slave (where the IBM drive used to be) and I have the exact same problem. No devices are detected. Apparently when all channels have devices on them none will be detected. What could be causing this?

UPDATE 2: If I unplug all devices on the secondary channel (DVD and CDRW), then connect the IBM HD as secondary master, the maxtor as primary master, everything is fine. What is going on here?

Try clearing your CMOS then redetect your ide devices and see what happens. Also, set the BIOS to default.

Thanks a lot, that fixed everything. But for future troubleshooting purposes, what exactly was the problem?

For some reason the CMOS wasn't able to properly detect the device on each IDE connector. I've had that happen a few times and going back to ground zero on the CMOS fixes it. Is your board an older model?

It's an A7M266. Not exactly the newest thing out there, but mine is only 2 years old. I believe the board was introduced in the beginning of 2001. I hope this doesn't mean it's going bad or something.
