HD Placement/Cooling

Is it okay to put hard drives in adjacent internal drive bays?

My case is poorly ventilated around the drive cage area. The internal drive bays set the drives apart by about 2-3mm, they're essentially right on top of each other. The drives are 60GB 75GXP's. Will heat be an issue?

I also have two 15GB 75GXP's in the same system, would it be better to place those next to each other instead?

What kind of case do you have? Some have larger optional 3.5" drive bays that you can buy. Otherwise, it's not too hard to modify one to make it work. You could also try putting the drives in the 5.25" bays if you have room.

I just installed a Maxtor 30GB next to my Western Digital HD.. After a couple hours running they drives heated up so much I couldn't touch them... I separated the two and now have been running for a couple days now with no problems and neither drives get warm at all.. So if I where you I'd separate them...

Elan Vital T5...

3 external 5.25" (cdrom, two hd's w/ mounting brackets)
1 external 3.5" (floppy)
2 internal 3.5" (the two hd's in question)

I like the physical dimensions of the case, tiny.
I've even managed to stuff a dual proc board in it.
Just doesn't leave much room for hardware manipulation.

edit: there are no free bays
