I just picked up a new Hatachi 250GB hard drive last night and need so advise. Here is what I need I want some space for my VHS capture so I can later transfer it to DVD and space for my OS and games and programs. Should I just do to partitions like make a 100GB partition for all my programs and files and 150GB for the video capture?

What is your thoughts?

One other thing when I fdisk the drive the first time and go to set the partition how do I determine the file size so it will workout to be a 100GB partition for C and the rest for D

I have 6 partitions on my HD - some of them are critical, some just for my own categorizing preferences.

I consider just two partitions as critical:
- OS partition: Windows + most-critical apps & utilities.
- Critical DATA partition: The stuff I really must safequard.
These two partitions are imaged to DVD media frequently in the event of hosed Windows or failed HD.

Games are not critical - if you have the CDs, it takes only minutes to re-install. I use a dedicated Games partition.

Some apps are non-critical (Word, Excel, etc.) - if you have the CDs, it takes only minutes to re-install. I install these on my APPS partition - BUT - configure these apps so that the DATA (docs, spreadsheets, etc.) are stored to folders on your DATA partition.

Just work out how much of your emphasis is on security and how much is simply on your own disk-organization preferences and filing preferences.

Hope this helps!
