HD packaging

Ordered 2 WD red drives recently from the egg. Just went to open the box and I've got 2 drives wrapped in bubble wrap without any boxes. Just curious if this is the way these drives are sold?

I recently ordered one Seagate drive from the egg, it was packed in their normal packaging; secured in the two pieces of plastic on each end that would hold the drive in a box (like their retail packaging at least for 2.5" drives). The box was fine and the drive was tested fine.

Depends on what you bought, OEM, bulk, what the egg calls "white box" or retail.

Hard drive packaging from Newegg is very inconsistent. I've had them package them as stated above, in a HD box with plastic end caps, I've had them shipped to me with a single layer of bubble wrap, I've even had them stack 3 or 4 drives and then wrap them. It seems the more you buy at once, the more likely you will get poor packaging.

I think that's one of the reasons you read of such high failure rates in the reviews. I buy them elsewhere now, unless it's a retail drive that has it's own packaging.

I just received a SSD from them. It was in the tiny little retail box which was simply put into a small padded envelope and shipped to me!

I ordered a HD from Amazon and didn't even bother to break the seal on the anti static bag. Reason being it was loose in a huge box with no packing. It was just rattling around loose. I could not freaking believe my eyes. It went right back and I ordered one from the Egg. Packing wasn't perfect but way better than Amazon. Never ever agaikn will I order a HD from them.

It seems you can get different packaging depending on which warehouse, and who packed it.

Looks like the same is going on at Amazon now, sometimes they pack it correctly, other times, they just throw it in a box.

Here is some more proof about the packing of drives:

Although WD touts the Red's reliability, an awful lot of Newegg user reviews complain of DOA drives. Over 20% of the reviews for the 2TB and 3TB models give those variants just one star, with stillborn drives and premature death often cited as the cause. I see just a couple of legitimate user reviews of the 4TB model, which has only been available for a few weeks, but both report problems. Oddly enough, the user reviews at Amazon are considerably more positive. We asked WD about the discrepancy; after looking into it, the company "identified an improper handling and packaging issue at a few partners." WD is working to resolve the issue, and we'll be keeping an eye on user reviews to see if the complaints persist.
