Going on the OP, I can only assume he's in the U.S.

If not, then there may be reason to complain but complaining that SD looks bad on an HD set is like complaining a Ferrari F50 sucks in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

You want HD content? It's out there. I have no cable, no satellite, and I watch quite a bit of it (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS). If I could get reception of it I'd have UPN and WB, too. If I had cable/satellite, I'd get HD content from ESPN, Discovery, HD Net, HD Net Movies, Bravo, HBO, Showtime, Movie Channel, Starz, Cinemax, and others.

Its out there?HD is out there??? Wait:

Total HD channels count : (withtout those HBO and Showtime as you call them in your country) :13

(note that not all the content is in HD on these channels.Only a specific number of programs are in HD)

Total SD channels count :165

Im telling you:The day HD will make people change rapiditly is when HD set will display good SD picture quality, because the end of SD is really not near the end.We have live for over the what?,past 40 years? With SD.Why do we need to stop that?

lol 165channels of what? are there 165 quality shows like desperate housewives? or are they moslty cr@p. what matters is prime time tv, and all the shows actually worth watching have been hd for a while now. stop embarrassing yourself. walk into any frys, best buy, circuit city. its a wall of wide screen hdtv that no one can miss, they dominate the showfloor. very few are so isolated they would not know about hd and desire it.

and as said we don't care so much if cnn isn't in hd... news tends to be watched on the go..while doing something else. its background. its image quality isn't a priority.

You haven't answered my question.

Take a 21" computer monitor and run it at 640x480 and what do you get?

You just don't get it and I doubt you ever will.

Then you might want to mention you're not in the U.S.

Geez.

And, btw, we have far more than 13 channels of HD content. See my post above.

And, as for SD on HD, of course it's not going to look as good. You still keep avoiding my question:

Take a 21" computer monitor and run it at 640x480, what do you get?

Resolution your going to say? Probably right. But why on earth do these television doesnt have somethging build in that let you change the resolution to watch good ol SD content??

That is where i am piss.I was piss to have purchase a tv to scrap 50 channels i loves for 2 channels of HD i like.

For the potential. Sure, countries outside the U.S. may not have the HD programming but, at the least, anamorphic DVDs will look a helluva lot better on an HD set than an SD set. Plus, HD-DVD/Blue-Ray is on the way, too.

Sounds like you want the TV manufacturers to go out of their way (and add costs) to make SD look better when it's an old format. That makes no sense.

You want to bitch and moan? Call up your cable/satellite provider and tell them you want HD content.

My new current 4:3 television( sony wega) is able to display 16:9 content ( an enhanced mode) that really make my dvd look nice( I set my dvd player in 16:9, and set my tv to display in 16:9 and the picture quality is amazing.Slap me if you wish, but i think it look better than it was looking on my 46 inc Hitachi ( Ok not BIGGER) but the quality is pretty amazing.

HD MIGHT be the future ( with this HD-DVD , blue ray era too.)But then i will take the decision in 4-5 years to buy back an HD set, not before that.

Perhaps in the states you have way mroe channels in HD, but here...we got 13 +1 channel of movie network in HD.

NFL sunday ticket is not even in HD.

Now later gotta go watch NHL exibition game...in SD ;)

So, iow, you went and bought an HD set without doing the proper research and are projecting your anger at yourself onto everything but.

Gotcha.

You bought a HDTV because you are a hardcore gamer? Did you not realize that probably less than 5% of games on Consoles are even displayed in HD?

Xbox display nearly all games in widescreen/480p. Nearly no games are in 1080i, but still it was looking amazing in 480p

All I gotta say is watching DVDs on my pc monitor gives awesome picture quality. And those are just standard definition movie DVDs. HDTV can't beat your pc display for sharpness/resolution.
Granted you got a small picture though.

I'm also debating the move to HDTV. Honestly right now I don't know if it would be wise for me to. I watch 90% SDTV, the other 10% is DVDs. Spending $1000 + on a TV where the main thing I watch would look horrible doesn't sound like a good ideal. Sure I could add on HD though the sat (Dish Network), but only a few of those channels I would even watch and most of them would require me to install a 2nd Dish. HD Cable is not a option where I am, and the only HD OTA locals we can get here are NBC and PBS.

Unless I just get a great deal on a HDTV, I'll probably stay with my old SD sets for awhile. I know people say you will watch HD no matter what you have, but I just can't see watching a program I have no interest in just because its in HD.

No he has a point. Find me a TV that is not Plasma or LCD that displays 480p but is not HD nowadays. Its simply not there. So if he wanted to display 480p he needed to get a HDTV. I wouldn't fault him for that, I see where he is coming from.
