I considering buying 4 Western Digital 250 GB Caviar SE SATA Drives. Will noise be a problem?

I would think so, my WD80SE makes enough noise to notice, so I would think the drives you're buying will, especially since they aren't fluid bearing. On the other hand I doubt you will find a very silent 1 tb setup...

The Maxtor 160GB (dual platter) I have is quite noisy. I can hear the seeks while at the PC. My Seagate 7200.7's seeks are inaudible once the lid is on or when my ear is farther than 6 inches from the drive. I'd get 5 7200.7's if they have a 200GB version (do they?)

You might consider the new Hitachi 7K250 SATA drives. Fluid bearings = quiet. I've got 2 of the 80GB variety in my rig and they are quieter and faster than the WD 1200JB they replaced.

StorageReview.com reviewed them and put them at the top of their Leaderboard as best in class.
