HD/IDE Problems

I have two HD related problems/questions:

I installed a new HD on my comp (mostly stock DELL). I replaced my master boot drive (on the primary channel). For some reason, when I start my comp the computer doesn't initially find the drive. I receive the following error: "Primary Drive 1 Not Found." I forget the exact verbage but is says this for channel 1 and 2. I am presented with the options of continuing or entering setup. If I continue, the computer starts as one would expect.

Second Question:

I moved a slave drive from the primary IDE channel to the seocndary IDE channel. This channel is currently attached to a 40 wire connector (vs an 80 on the primary). Should I have problems mounting the existing partition on this drive? What would be the best setup? It is a slave to the CD-ROM on the secondary channel. Can I replace the 40 wire with an 80 wire?

Thanks

~The first one could be a jumpering problem.

~I'd move up to an 80pin cable if I were you, but because of the extra bandwidth offered by it. Your setup works.

most dells are damn picky about jumper settings.....double check them and try again, also use the original cable that came with the dell....

If you are using standard Dell cables, they will be expecting to have your drives jumpered to Cable Select.
.bh.

Ok. My main HD is still not recognized initially. I have tried all jumper setting on it to no avail.

With regard to my second channel. Neither drive is recognized if I use the 80pin cable. If I use the 40pin though, the volume on my HD in the slave position can't be found.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks
Matt
