HD Failure?

Right before I left for vacation my computer froze while doing some routine task. After a while I hit the reset button and now XP won't boot. It goes through the normal boot sequence, detecting secondary drives is slow, but no Windows load screen (it's just black.) I tried unplugging the secondary HD, it boots at normal speed but with the same end result. Funny thing is when I unplug both secondary IDE devices it doesn't boot at all. I have a 4 y/o AMD system with the following IDE setup:

Primary master: 80GB Maxtor HD (Windows XP Pro)
Primary slave: None
Seconardy master: 120GB WD HD (files/backup)
Secondary slave: Pioner DVD burner

Did the primary HD take a dump on me? It's only about a year old. I really want to avoid reinstalling everything if possible (shame on me for no image.) Somebody, help!

You can try doing a repair install of WinXP and it will keep your files intact and just replace windows files with those off the CD and you have to update again. It's kind of what I call a "dirty fix" meaning that it leavs alot of gaps that can still haunt you.
