Before getting anything, I'd get a Firewire card - they are cheap and better for ext. HD performance. After that, many here seem to prefer the Bytecc enclosures. You can get it in just FW or Combo USB/FW. ADS and AMS are other reliable brands but usually more expensive than most. And Kingwin for those who like the glitz.
. But then, I use SCSI and can have up to 15 HDs on line at a time and enable/disable them individually thru the adapter's BIOS - seldom need to swap. I use my FW drive strictly for backing up.

USB 2 high speed spec is higher - in real world performance on continuous thruput FW does better. And I think FW relies less on your processor.

I'm running firewire. Although I'm considering getting a hub here soon instead of daisy chaining. Kind of annoying having to have the other devices on if I want to use others down the chain. I currently have a Plextor PX-708UF, the POS hard drive enclosure, and my Sony DCR-TRV33 running on 1394 (Firewire). I don't use USB for anything high bandwidth. 🙂 Although it is nice to have 1394 / USB devices, so that I can take them elsewhere, and use them anywhere. Even though it's better, not everyone has 1394.

ADS and AMS are reliable; Kingwin and Bytecc are good too. Okay, awesome. Thanks a lot. 🙂 And I thought about going SCSI, but the price of the drives compared to their size just wouldn't work for me, so I'm doing SATA RAID with a PCI-X RAID controller. Works nicely.
