HD DVD versus Blu-Ray versus HD VMD (old)

Sony and Disney really pulled out all the stops this week to deflate the HD-DVD release of Transformers.

Amazon Movers & Shakers - all four pages (1-100) are loaded with Blu-Ray titles from this weeks BOGO sale.

Frys.com is already sold out from their $10 Blu-Ray sale; Best Buy, Circuit City, TWEC, and a few other major retailers all have a ton of Blu-Ray titles available for 2 for $25-$30 this week only.

We'll have to wait until next weeks Nielsen numbers to see how well they did.

I'm personally format neutral, and only planned on buying Transformers on HD-DVD this week; but this weeks sale prompted me to purchase 6 Blu-Ray titles as well (for $10 each).

Like I said in the other thread, HD-DVD is supposed to win this week. I mean, Transformers was the title everyone hemmed and hawed about when Paramount went HD-DVD exclusive. If HD-DVD can't do it this week, it's never going to happen.

Is Sony PR Spinning Wheels with Blue-Ray Deals?

:yawn;

Another blog post giving his personal opinion. You're not the "mitchell" who wrote the blog are ya? 😉 Advertising your own blog perhaps? 😛

You did misspell "Blu-ray" just like the blog writer. The blog also misspells "HD DVD" by adding the dash that shouldn't be there.

Sounds like a reasonable explanation to me. I was wondering why there were so many blu-ray deals all of a sudden.

Yeah, the fate of the whole world rests on the shoulders of a mediocre movie. There are no other considerations, like spoiler sales.

If HD DVD were to have a fire sale during a major BD release, it'd be called a desperation move. Just like the dropping of prices of the players. Naturally, when BD drops prices, it's called a killing stroke.

No name calling

You know what they say, the history books are written by the winners.

No, the only "winners" are corporations taking our dollars. But when they reduce prices on products, who am I to argue? This week isn't going to determine anything, though. I wasn't planning on buying Transformers Blu-ray or no Blu-ray. Friends of mine who don't care one bit about the HD formats didn't like Transformers enough to buy the dvd. Of course to be fair, the same applies to Spiderman 3 being released end of the month. But it's a shame the format war continues on. Last movie bought was 1408, not even released on either HD format. 🙁 Great movie, worth the dvd price, but I'd certainly have rather bought the HD version. Back to Transformers, there really isn't the same buzz around it like there was for 300. I would be very surprised if it hit 100k in sales this week. And even if sales are higher, that's great too, means more people are buying HD movies, and hopefully more will be down the road - so I don't have to buy titles like 1408 on regular dvd anymore.

I Think CC selling Transformers on HDDVD for $15 these last few days will help them hit that mark.

Hell, I'm with you: I didn't want to buy it either, I only have a Blu-Ray player, but I would have bought it ~1 hour ago while at CC had I realized that the DVD version is also included...

When you consider the types of movies these people buy--just because they are HD...the quality of the film (outside of PQ/AQ) is clearly never a consideration.

Some guy on AVS went to CC and bought every damn Saw Movie. I mean...come on! I would HOPE that the only reason anyone would consider owning that drivel is b/c it was cheap.

Sony Forks Over Chip Production to Toshiba

So Toshiba, the main backer of HD-DVD, will be supplying Sony with the Cell processor and the image processor for the playstation 3. I can't be the only one that finds this odd.
Toshiba manufacturers the chips that go into the PS2, and even though the Cell is generally attributed to Sony & IBM, Toshiba had a large hand in development and application. The Cell is poised to be used in more devices than just the PS3.

In other words, they're not corporations who hate each other, they're corporations who make joint ventures when it benefits both sides.
