Since a lot has changed since the last thread here is the most up to date information as of 8/26/07:

Blu-ray:
Blu-ray Disc has gained a large amount of support in the corporate world,[33] with companies such as Apple Inc., Dell, and Panasonic supporting it. Blu-ray Disc was first developed as a joint venture between Sony Corporation and Philips (inventor of the Compact Cassette, Laserdisc, and Compact Disc) in 2002[34] as a next generation data and video storage format alternative to DVD.

Currently, Blu-ray Disc is exclusively supported by Sony Pictures Entertainment and MGM (both owned by Sony) as well as Disney, 20th Century Fox, and Lionsgate. It is non-exclusively supported by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. Several members of the Blu-ray organization's Board of Directors, such as Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, and LG, pledged support to Blu-ray Disc, and later, also supported HD DVD.

Beginning July 2007, Blockbuster Video, one of the largest chain of DVD and video game rental stores in the world, will be carrying only Blu-ray Discs in 1,450 more stores,[39] in addition to the original 250 that carried both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Online they will still be offering both formats.[40] Blockbuster will continue to offer both formats at its initial 250 stores that currently carry both high-definition formats.[41]

On July 25, 2007, Target Corporation announced they will carry Sony Blu-ray Disc stand alone players in their stores and promote them with end cap displays including exclusive Blu-ray Disc movies from Sony and Walt Disney. While Target will not carry HD DVD stand alone players on its shelves, the chain will continue to sell both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD movies in all stores and HD DVD players online.[42]

HD DVD:
HD DVD Promotion Group Member List contains the main promoters of HD DVD, namely Toshiba, HP, NEC, Sanyo, Microsoft, RCA, Kenwood, Intel, and Memory-Tech Corporation. The HD DVD format is also non-exclusively supported by Hitachi Maxell, LG, Lite On, Onkyo, Meridan, Samsung,[35] and Alpine.

In terms of major studios in North America, HD DVD is currently exclusively backed by Universal Studios (including subsidiaries Focus Features and Rogue Pictures), Paramount Pictures (including Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies, MTV Films, DreamWorks Pictures and DreamWorks Animation), The Weinstein Company (including Dimension Films), and First Look Studios.

The format is non-exclusively backed by Warner Bros. Pictures (it should be noted that a number of Warner's titles?Batman Begins, Constantine, Troy (excluding Troy: Director's Cut), V for Vendetta, The Perfect Storm, Poseidon, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, The Matrix Trilogy?are HD DVD exclusive at the present), Warner Music Group, New Line Cinema, HBO, Studio Canal, and Image Entertainment (including the Discovery Channel),[37] Magnolia Pictures,[38] Brentwood Home Video, Ryko, Koch/Goldhil Entertainment.[39] HD DVD does have more studio support than Blu-ray in Europe.

HD DVD is currently exclusively backed by several adult-movie/pornography studios/publishers, including Wicked Pictures, Pink Visual, Bang Bros, Digital Playground Inc. and ClubJenna Inc. (which on 22 June 2006 was acquired by Playboy Enterprises), and HD DVD is also non-exclusively backed by Vivid Entertainment

On August 20, 2007, Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, announced they would no longer be supporting the Blu-ray format. Citing HD DVD's lower consumer equipment and disc replication costs (due to its simarlarities to the standard DVD format), all future Paramount/Dreamworks titles will be released exclusively on HD DVD. Together, Paramount and DreamWorks are currently the 2007 box office leaders and their first two HD DVD exclusive titles Shrek 3 and Transformers are both poised to be top sellers during the 2007 holiday season.[43][44] Movies directed by Steven Spielberg are not included in this announcement as Spielberg controls his films.[45] In an interview with PC World Alan Bell the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Paramount Pictures stated the support for HD DVD exclusively is currently indefinite.[46]

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that the upcoming 'The Company' Blu-ray release (October 23rd) will be delivered on a two discs set featuring 1080p video and PCM audio. Additionally, Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that the upcoming 'Robocop' release (October 9th) will be the unrated version, and feature AVC 1080p video and DTS-HD Master Audio on a BD-25. The only extra on 'Robocop' will be a trailer.

So let me get this straight. You release a highly expected video like Robocop, put it on a 25GB disc, then say that HD DVD doesn't have the bandwidth nor space to fit a marquee title with lossless audio and good video on a 30GB disc? Not only that but you include NO bonus features other than the trailer?

Then, they have the balls to release another highlighted release on *TWO* discs rather than one? What happened to all of this vaunted space and low costs of movies due to that?

Man, I don't know how good this is going to get, but I am sure it'll provide more comedy than Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, the old Eddie Murphy, and Lewis Black all wrapped up into one.

It's simple. The rumors about the high production costs and low yield of BD50 discs are true. HD DVD has no such problem with their two layer discs, and the fact that the DVD forum has just approved the triple layer HD DVDs is just more icing on the cake.

Are you kidding me? Does that mean yet another Sony standard blows goats?

Nah, can't be true. Sony had to release Robocop on 25GB discs because they wanted to do everybody a favor and not overload them with special features, a better transfer, and IME/PiP BD 1.1 stuff.

After all, nobody wants to pay the same amount for more stuff. That would make too much sense!

LOL @ the HD-DVD defenders using this as a jab at Blu-Ray. A single-layer BD disc holds 84% as much data as a double-layer HD-DVD disc. That's bragging rights for double-layer HD-DVD discs having better yields? What happens when you bring HD-DVD up to Blu-Ray double-layer territory (50GB)? Well, they yields really start sucking:

http://www.screendigest.com/on...tes/vi-060907-ec3/show

As with the BD50, it is likely to take some time for production yields to reach a commercially viable level.

Even if they can pull off a decent yield:

http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9776981-1.html

The good news is that the 51GB discs should play in all HD DVD players currently on the market. We discussed this with James Armour from Toshiba's optical storage division at CeBIT this year, and were told that although the third layer would be harder to read, and generate more data errors, the player's error correction should be able to fix these problems without picture and sound problems.

And that's if the TL51 vaporware ever sees market, which my guess is it won't any time soon.

So, I *really* would throw the double-layer stone until you look at the house you're living in :)

BD50 yields @ 80%

Come what? "At Blu-ray.com PaidGeek has confirmed" So some guy on a BLU-RAY forum says it..so it must be so. From a third-party vendor at that. Show us some independent research and data that proves it's at 80%.

How many current disc are 50GB? What is the level of mass production that they have done that proves it's at 80%?

Actually, it's an "ok" upconverter:

http://www.hometheaterblog.com...1/toshiba_hda2_re.html

Per usual I?ve included my HQV benchmark results and of course these results are for standard definition playback only.

?Color Bar/Vertical Detail: Pass ? Score 10 of 10
?Jaggies Pattern 1: Pass ? Score 3 of 5
?Jaggies Pattern 2: Pass ? Score 3 of 5
?Flag: Pass ? Score 5 of 10
?Picture Detail: Pass ? Score 10 of 10
?Noise Reduction: Pass ? Score 10 of 10
?Motion Adaptive Noise Reduction: Pass ? Score 10 of 10
?3:2 Detection: Pass ? Score 10 of 10
?Film Cadence: Pass ? Score (Combined) 40 of 40
?Mixed 3:2 Film, Horizontal Text Crawl: Pass ? Score 5 of 10
?Mixed 3:2 Film, Vertical Text Crawl: Pass ? Score 10 of 10
?Total Score:116 out of a possible 130.

But it's an even worse HD media player:

http://www.hometheaterblog.com...06/hqv_benchmarks.html

Moving onto the Toshiba HD-A2 feeding the DLA-HD1, I was interested to see how well the player/projector would perform with the same battery of tests just thrown at the PS3 and HD1. So without further delay here are the results for a Toshiba HD-A2 at 1080i. (De-interlacing performed by the HD1's Gennum VXP)

?Noise Reduction: Pass ? Score 15 of 25
?Video Resolution Loss Test: Pass ? Score 20 of 20
?Video Reconstruction Test (Jaggies): Pass ? Score 20 of 20
?Film Resolution Loss Test: Fail ? Score 0 of 25
?Film Resolution Loss Test - Stadium: Pass ? Score 10 of 10
?Total Score: 65 out of a possible 100.

Whereas the PS3 scored 100/100:

?Noise Reduction: Pass ? Score 25 of 25
?Video Resolution Loss Test: Pass ? Score 20 of 20
?Video Reconstruction Test (Jaggies): Pass ? Score 20 of 20
?Film Resolution Loss Test: Pass ? Score 25 of 25
?Film Resolution Loss Test - Stadium: Pass ? Score 10 of 10
?Total Score: 100 out of a possible 100.

So, for the money, you're better off getting a real upconverter and waiting it out, than getting a HD-A2 just to say you're going HD-DVD. Chances are you'll be replacing the A2 in less than a year anyway...

BD50 represents 40% of the titles. There's no need to make *every* disc BD50, for obvious reasons.

LOL @ arbitrary benchmarks that mean nothing. Good job taking from a review that praised Toshiba's HD DVD players and tried to use it to make them look bad.

I skipped forward to chapter eight where Leeloo is crawling through the air-ducts; the shadow detail, sharpness and overall detail were all spot-on. The motion was fluid and lifelike and the flesh tones were very believable. Overall I was quite satisfied with the A2's standard definition DVD playback and I never had the feeling that I was missing something or felt the desire to pop the disc back over into the XA1. For those of you who?ve heard the rave reviews about the HD-A1 and HD-XA1?s standard definition DVD playback, rest assured that the HD-A2 carries on in the same vein.

Scene after scene of ?The Hulk? with the HD-A2 exemplified what the format is capable of, crystal clear, highly detailed, high definition with superb audio quality. This consistency from shot to shot, in my opinion at least, plays a huge part in the immersion factor that?s so critical in a pre-recorded films ability to draw you in and just let the story unfold. Another interesting thing I keep re-discovering with HD DVD is text legibility. For example when an actor is holding/reading a newspaper you can often make out the actual text on the page and not just the headlines.

Suggested retail aside (the HD-A2 lists for $499.99) the player can be found for as little as $424.99 with a bit of hunting; even at full retail the HD-A1 and now the HD-A2 are no brainer's in my opinion. In the relative short amount of time since HD DVD?s launch, I?ve done an about-face with my home video purchases. Pre-HD DVD, my DVD purchases had slowed to a trickle, occasionally adding a 3rd or 4th disc to an existing series or the less occasional purchase of a theatrical favorite.

Oh, and notice how he says the HD-A2 lists for $499.99? That's because this article is from January 15,2007. It is 9 months old. There have been several firmware releases since then. Also look at what he says regarding the HD-A2's score on the second link you posted:

As you can see the HD-A2 feeding the JVC DLA-HD1 failed a rather important test, the ?Film Resolution Loss?. This would appear to be a result of the way the HD1?s Gennum VXP video processor handles this particular test sequence as evident in this response new window from Gennum on the subject. It would seem as if this can be remedied by means of a firmware update to the projector, whether it will be is of course an entirely different matter. Of course as the Gennum representative points out this is of little consequence in real-world scenarios i.e. the VXP passes the subsequent test with flying colors. Unfortunately I don?t have a HD-XA2 on-hand to test but as it?s equipped with a HQV chipset I can only assume it would fair better at 1080p than the A2 at 1080i.

The reason it failed was because of the projector he was using, not because of the player.

Come again?

Yields at 80% is completely bogus.

In order to increase the yields on the discs, they are having to limit the data on the discs to under 45 GB because if they go over the 45 GB yields drop to very low levels.

In the non-Sony manufacturing plants that have attempted to make BD50's, their yields are around 10%, so essentially these lines are useless at this point and we are back to only two semi-viable production lines for BD50's. That means there are only two lines to produce discs for Sony, Disney, MGM, FOX, & Lions Gate.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb...1462586&postcount=3616

Even if you factor in Sony yields for BD50 they are still at under 40%:

Feel free to find HQV benchmarks on the HD-A2 (both HD and SD) that prove the player has improved with firmware updates. As expected, the 1080i output screwed their score. Beside that, you can't blame the poor noise reduction score on anything but the player.

Straight from the horse's mouth:
As of this writing the Sony Playstation 3, Toshiba HD-A1, HD-XA1, or HD-A2 will not de-interlace 1080i material to 1080p. These players can only be used to evaluate the capabilities of your video processor or display, not the onboard video processing of the player.

Which is patently false. 80% or not (and I still take paidgeek's word over just about anyones) LegendKiller should promptly shove his foot in his mouth, as I have proven that BD50 discs are in abundant supply (I count at total of 119 BD50 titles out there today):

http://www.blu-raystats.com/index.php

For whatever reason The Company and Robocop are on two discs, it ain't yields.

Let's ring up the cons to TL51, shall we?

  • The format is not signed off on by the DVD Consortium.
  • Zero TL51 titles out there vs 119 BD50 titles.
  • It will not play on 100% of the HD-DVD players out there.
  • Those players it works on rely on heavy error correction to read the third-layer.
  • Cannot be used for bitrates over 36.55 Mbit/s.

Still want to talk about yields?

Yet the PS3 scored 100/100 on the test and the HD-A2 scored only 65/100. And what has been my argument about the HD-A2 all along? The 1080i output makes it a gimped player. How many setups out there can deinterlace 1080i properly? Good thing for the PS3 and BD stand-alone units 1080p output is there.

You get what you pay for.

Yes you get what you pay for. I guess you constantly think that everybody needs what you want, or everybody should pay for it. Considering that not everybody needs 1080p, nor wants it, doesn't mean that everybody should have to have it. Why do you think you know everybody's needs and wants? Are you some kind of fvcking oracle of economics, utility, and business practices? What about psychology? Do you think you should tell everybody what they should buy? Should they buy only the best despite what they dont want? Just because that one de-interlacer didn't do well doesn't mean they all don't.

You seem to forget that consumers want choices. Not everybody needs 1080p, get over your egotistical self-centeredness for 5 minutes and remember that.

I don't take anybody's word over anything unless they work for the company and they can back up their assertions. It's called heresay and is worthless until verified. If I just took heresay and used that as a basis for my business decisions my bank could lose billions. You may trust it, but I don't.

Keep in mind that we don't know what TL51 is coming to come out as. If it's vaporware, it's vaporware. What is readily apparent is that 25GB is plenty for movies, as they are being released at that level.

1. The physical specs are and is going through the processes.
2. So what?
3. We do not know this. Even if they don't, I am sure Toshiba will offer some incentive to upgrade. Unlike BDA which will make hundreds of thousands of players obsolete and will probably offer nothing.
4. Everything relies on error correction to some degree. Nobody knows how much and I am sure Toshiba is taking their time to make sure its correct.
5. Who gives a rats ass about bandwidth? Can you show one piece of evidence that that added bandwidth does anything for you? How big is your TV that you can judge accurately? WHat methodologies? What scientific methods?

You have nothing. It's all theoretical BS and not one single person can prove that any theoretical advantage in bandwidth has translated into a real world one.

Otherwise, It's all BS.

Do you still want to Backpeddle?? Prove what you said.

Something to keep in mind is that the BDA's approach to this format war is smear tactics against HD DVD, whereas HD DVD's approach is to lower prices and appeal to those 99% of DVD users who are still waiting out this war. Everytime HD DVD releases some good news, BAM, BDA is there to reply with some snide ass remark. BDA is shitting themselves right now because HD DVD is still around in spite of the fact that they told people HD DVD was dead almost a year ago.

Something someone said on AVS that couldn't be any closer to the truth:

It's like having only two hardware stores in town that are built next to each other. One is constantly advertising lower prices and new unique features to their product while the other keeps advertising the store across the street is closed and went out of business cause they suck.

The simple fact is, you can't trust AVS anymore for any kind of clean, unbiased information. That 10% number came from a Microsoft employee, then when he was being hammered on them, along came a journalist (David Vaughn) who knows "a guy" who said yields were 10%. Then Dave gets hammered on it just like the Microsoft employee, and suddenly the next day he comes up with 40% & 50% as yields - all of a sudden he has multiple contacts who are willing to freely supply numbers that previously were impossible for anyone to obtain. But he can't reveal who they are or who they work for, or how they are able to provide the numbers. Dave is an outsider who may or may not be receiving accurate information. For all we know, his contacts are biased as well. Dave is most certainly not an insider, with no first-hand knowledge whatsoever.

No, AVS is not a source of reliable information anymore. Heck, the Microsoft employee, Amir, once claimed that each BD50 disc costs $200 to manufacture! The atmosphere over there is not to learn the science behind the formats - it's just to try and pick out any little tid-bit anywhere and rub in the other side's faces, no matter whether it's truth, rumor, FUD, anything.

If I am going to spend $299 on a player, I expect it to do better than 65/100 on HQV. That's just tossing money out the window, IMO. So yeah, you get what you pay for, YMMV.
