EDIT:
update

Confirmed

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement.

Game over.

At least my HD-A2 will get some use with repeated Transformers viewings until Paramount's agreement expires.

I guess this means we should start buying up our Blade Runner and Harry Potters in HD DVD before they go extinct?

They won't go extinct. I STILL see copies of Mission Impossible on Blu-Ray for sale online and in stores.

Adios to BOGO movie deals and (what there was of) downward price pressure on BD players.

Warner said it would continue releasing in the HD DVD format until the end of May,

Looks like the remastered 'Twister' will sneak under the wire.

I'm really going to have to start stocking up on movies. They're going to have to last until BD players are cheaper than my A2 was. 🙁

I'm sure there will be some great deals on inventory liquidations of HD-DVD titles.

Anyways, DVD was the ONLY optical disc format, and prices dropped rapidly due to competition between manufacturers.

yes, but it will only be relevant for movies stamped in the near future.

the choice you need to make involves
should I just buy a ton of HD DVD now, hoping that my player will last until I no longer need it? They will break, eventually, and won't be replaceable. then you're stuck with too many movies you may not want to replace (for possibly the 3rd+ time...) Hopefully Toshiba will have some sort of repair service well into the future.

Blu Ray will certainly be far cheaper in the near future so replacing a failing HD DVD player with a modern BR player when the need arises shouldn't be a cost issue; but if you have a significant pile of HD DVDs and no functioning player down the road, all you have is a significant pile of doorstops. Here's hoping that affordable combo players become reality soon, and remain so for a long time...

best option now seems to be to rent HD DVD until the end.

I wonder if this announcement will boost PS3 sales? I'd imagine there are some fence sitters who will now take the plunge and invest in a BD player and the most future proof of BD players is the PS3 . . .

Yes. It will most likely boost PS3 sales. People can feel more comfortable buying a PS3 with its price premium now that Warner is no their side.

Didn't really expect Warner to go out on a limb with HD-DVD so I guess that about settles this war. I really hope that it doesn't take too long for BRD players to come down in price. I really don't feel like buying the LG combo format drive for my PC just to watch HD movies. I guess the real shame is that it just so happened that the movies I cared far more about were HD exclusives and as far as the BRD exclusives went I didn't really care for 'em (no desire to own Disney movies in HD). Hopefully HD-DVD liquidation sales will get me some new movies!

Hooray! The Venturer player should be dropping down to $98 retail! 😀

Time for me to go pick one up.

After all, with Blu-ray starting to pull ahead, the studios will go all out with BD+ shutting down any BD player they wish, and also install trojans into computers. I've already read multiple reports of the new profile 1.1 titles War & Resident Evil Extinction causing profile 1.0 players to explode in flames...

Come on Blu-ray... Give us that Profile 1.1 standalone player for $199.

Any predictions when? I'm guessing (hopefully) fall 2008.

Panasonic dropped the included movies from the DMP-BD30K and lowered the price a bit. You might see black friday deals next Christmas about $200, but I mean Blu-ray player prices will drop when they are able to and still maintain profitability amongst the competing electronics companies, Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Philips, Mitsubishi, Funai, Denon, Marantz, Loewe, Deawoo, JVC, etc.

It's not going to be a race to the bottom and, in turn, exclude all manufacturers except the primary beneficiaries of Blu-ray royalties.

Curious, though, what do most of you BD fans think about falling BD player prices? 200 bucks by next Christmas? Over a year from the time when HD players were under 100 bucks? Is BRD really that much better than HD-DVD that we should wait a bit over a year for the same affordability of players? I'm just really hoping BRD players drop to the 200 level soon; until then I guess I'm buying HD-DVDs on clearance! 🙂

Side note; what's to become of the HD-DVD web enabled features if HD-DVDs go under?

Well, at least now I can bow out of the format war. I'm not going to unload my HD-DVD player (360 add-on) or my movies (only have about 10) but I'm definitely not buying any more or investing in Blu-Ray. At this point I'll just wait it out to see which format definitely wins and if the disc is really the way of the future with HD home movies. Netflix will still be handy at least.

no payoff apparently

Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group says the studio took no pay-offs to exclusively back Blu-ray.

In a post-announcement conference call, Tsujihara flatly denied rumors that studio had accepted anywhere from 250M to $500M in exchange for dropping its HD DVD format support.

According to the exec, Warner's sole motivation in dropping its HD DVD format support was to ensure growth of the "category" and the long-term health of the industry....

looks like its time to put my hd-a2 up on ebay. With all the free movies the player basically ended up free so I'm not too heartbroken

why would you do that? did it stop working or something? HD DVDs will be available for a year+ at least. While it's likely that they'll stop manufacturing them, I doubt Toshiba will stop supporting them.

Imagine if they treated their early adopters like that. 5 years down the road, not offering to service failing, discontinued machines. would be pretty crummy on their part.
