HD-DVD to BluRay

Question:
Is it moral/ethical/legal to purchase a HD-DVD and transfer it to BluRay, then destroy the HD-DVD?

Background:
BSG Season 1 is avail on HD-DVD, but I only have a BluRay player. Can I purchase the discs, then have a friend convert/burn it to BluRay, then get rid of the original and not end up in FPMITA prison?

legally i don't know, ethically i would say leave the originals on your shelf rather than destroying them.

The only defense you could bring up about making the blu-ray copies would be that they serve as a back-up of the HD-DVDs. If you do not have the HD-DVDs anymore, you lose this option. Also, I'm not 100% sure that you could classify them as a back-up if you change the format. The one good thing is that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray pretty much can use the same codecs in audio and video, so you could keep the source the same. The only thing is, the menus would change (HDi versus BDJ) and you may have trouble explaining that one 😛.

Oh and I doubt anyone would seriously care unless you started selling them.

legally dont know, ethically i believe you own the content and should be free to save it / store it / view it in whichever manner you wish

Legally, I'm sure it's a shady area.

Ethically, I have absolutely no problem with it...FairUse principles and all that.

I don't see what the problem is if you aren't sharing the copies with the internet or selling it.

Which is what any normal person would call "fair use", but the RIAA/MPAA are not normal people.

For any title that is currently available in bluray, it would probably be cheaper to just buy the title in the new format. Unfortunately some titles haven't crossed over yet.

Ethically there is no problem because it fall under fair use. Destroying the originals actually weakens your standpoint rather than strengthens because it is your proof of ownership.

Legally, the DMCA blocks it.

Technically it's illegal, but I wouldn't let that stop you. Morally I don't see anything wrong with it. You bought the movie and should be able to watch it in whatever format you want.

I didn't even realize this was possible, though. For example, I know Blu-Ray and HD-DVD use different standards for the menus, so that probably wouldn't transfer, unless they have programs that can do the conversion. I dunno, haven't really been keeping up w/the latest on Blu-Ray ripping and burning.

Agreed. You bought movie X in HD, so you should be able to watch movie X in HD 5 years later. In 5 years time, it'd have to be Blu-Ray to be viewable anyway. You're just doing now what you would need to do in the future.

They don't mention anything about interactive menus, though. I'd assume this content is lost and this simply rips the video portions of the disk. As long as you don't mind losing the menus and stuff like that, though, sounds like it would be a decent solution.

Why not just wait for the series to come out on Bluray? I can't see how burning so many discs to Bluray recordable discs is cost-effective.

problem is that the HD DVD version can be had at firesale prices (Fry's has it for $19.99)....if/when this comes out on blu ray, it'll probably close to $60...

Have you checked into what burnable BR discs cost? Not to mention a Blu-Ray burner?? I must be missing something here...

why bother destroying it?

Just posing the hypothetical. I guess just so that you cannot sell/give it to someone else.

As mentioned by someone else above, that would make it difficult to prove ownership though.

The media price would be the kicker. If you know someone with the hardware already, that would be a wash.
