Movie Studio Support
Bluray: Paramount, Warner Brothers, Sony, Fox, Disney.

HD-DVD: Universal, Paramount, Warner Brothers, Studio Canale. Amir points out that Warner put out 50% of the top movies of the last year - quality over quantity?

So essentially, Universal is the only major studio that isn't supporting BluRay.

When it comes down to support, BluRay is the superior format. People love to bash it because it's popular and "cool" to hate Sony, but looking objectively at the situation I'm not sure why one would consider HD-DVD superior.

BluRay's biggest problem is that the initial players were buggy and too expensive and that the initial titles had less-than-stellar picture quality. These issues have begun to work themselves out (the PS3 is no more expensive than HD-DVD alternatives, and software quality has improved), so we'll see how the "format war" plays out.

They're still too damn expensive at their entry point though... why would I pay over twice as much just for (sometimes noticeable) better picture quality. Although, I have no qualms buying the $20 HD-DVDs at Wal-Mart, but seeing some movies going for $30 and $35 is just ridiculous.

walmart.com has bd movies from 20-28 bucks. also the improvement in video quality... i think its pretty darn noticeable. also, not sure if this is accurate, but walmart has 114 bd titles and 109 hddvd titles for sale on thier website.

The only way you are going to see a visual difference between HD-DVD and BR files is by examining screenshots. I've yet to see an objective test that shows BR having a better image across several movies. Both have *far more* than enough bandwidth for hours of clean HD video, and the rest is up the the device.

And I'm sure the devices will vary in the quality of their output, but its got little to do with the encoded data on the disc.

Oh I was speaking of SD and HD. Since he said twice the price. Sorry I just assumed he meant regular DVDS versus HDDVD and BD. Yes I agree there is no appreciable difference between HDDVD and BD yet.

I wasn't discussing BDs at Wal-Mart in my post. I looked at them, but I don't have any idea to buy them, because I don't own a BD player. If I remember correctly, the usual price was about $30 for a BD movie. It was about half and half $30 and $20 HD movies. I was tempted to replace my V for Vendetta special edition DVD with the HD-DVD one ($20), but I got cheap :p.

Also BD2003, Randay was talking about me discussing the quality difference between DVD and HD/BD. Personally, I'm used to watching less than perfect encodes (tv shows, etc), so DVD's don't bother me as much as they may to others.

K, makes more sense then...I wasn't sure, but I thought you could be referring to HD vs. BD since you are the resident sony fanboy, and HD-DVDs are definitely cheaper than BDs.

But HD is most definitely worth paying for over SD...if you can't see the difference immediately, it's prob your gear.

Yeah BD is more expensive then HD, but not by a whole lot, if you wanna take the time to check out walmart, you can see that the price ranges are pretty much equal. at retail, BD is more expensive but if you know where to look, you can get em for good prices.

I haven't jumped into the mess yet. Still happy enough with HD channels and my upconverting DVD player. I'm sure that at some point I'll jump in, but I want to see things play out at the moment. If I did jump in the near future, it would be HD-DVD primarily for cost reasons. Cheaper movies and cheaper hardware (I already own an 360, so drive would be cheap).

I don't own either, but it seems plausible that it will just go the way of DVD+R/DVD-R - that is, everyone will eventually own a combo player that can read both.

Yeah, it's really a random thing based on what movie you want and what the studio decides to release it at (MSRP-wise). I think any movie I would've bought was only $20, but a BD movie I may've purchased would've been $30, but the exact opposite could be true for someone else.

I just find it annoying sometimes that I'd be forced to go to DVD because the movie's only on BD.

WB has announced they're going to be coming out with 2 sided discs; blue-ray on one side, HD-DVD on the other. Obviously, they are VERY format neutral. It saves shelf space for the retailer, and WB can probably sell more copies per store since some places might be hesitant of buying more HD-DVD than Blue-ray discs of a title, since now it doesn't matter.

This is why I wholeheartedly support the cracking of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. In addition to enabling fair use, it would make the format war essentially useless. :D

How much are those double-sided discs going to cost though?

At least your Hollywood video has high definition content available...I went into mine a few weeks ago (just after getting my PS3, I also have an HD-DVD drive) and asked if they had anything on Blu-Ray. The clerk looked puzzled and started looking in her computer, then asked a fellow associate if they had "Blu-ray on DVD". The other one said "no, but we have Blue Crush".

Production cost would be doubled, maybe. But eventually they would make enough movies and figure out a way to do it cheaper.
MSRP would not change much at all.

Fixed.

It's frustrating. HD DVD is the cheaper, easier technology, but everybody for some reason is behind Sony despite the PS3 (and the rest of the overly expensive BD players) selling like lukewarm snot. :(

According to their individual pages on wikipedia, 138 titles have been released for hd-dvd, and more than 137 have been released for blu-ray.

It's a pity that they don't realize that not all consumers enjoy double-sided discs. I like to put my movies in CD books and double-sided DVDs are just the worst to put in them. I usually put the full screen side up though... stupid full screen, as worthless as Blu-Ray! Thankfully though... I can tell what the DVD is somewhat easily based on where it is in the book (alphabetical order).

haha.
That may sound silly but its kinda true.
VHS and BetaMax were very competative until the porn publishers decided to use VHS.
They may not seem like a big industry but they put out movies at a much faster rate than normal studios.
I also recall for a while there most dirty movies cost between 40 and 50 bucks on VHS.
I'm glad to see that trend changed.

Now we just wait to see the first truly Hi-def smut film and all be well again.

10 billion dollar industry seems big to me

Because certain studios like Sony own the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD standard. Google it.
