I bought HD-DVD over BD for a few reasons that I am not going to get into. It's still early and the battle is definately on-going. However, I could not help but notice that almost EVERY single new movie ad I saw over the weekend stated 'Coming to DVD and Blu-Ray Disc this Tuesday'. I went to the local Hollywood Video yesterday and noticed that they have at least a 2:1 BD vs. HD ratio for rent as well.

I don't want a HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray conversation to start here. I'm just wondering if others have noticed this and feel the same way. The video store example could be a local issue but I am definately concerned about the TV advertisements. Maybe ads have been on TV that I missed stating the opposite (DVD and HD-DVD) but if so I have yet to see one.

I think soon enough most studios will release movies on both formats -- why wouldn't they?

Because certain studios support Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Google it.

I have noticed that since the launch of ps3 (nov last year) that the BD section at my local bestbuy has doubled and is the same if not a little bigger then the HDDVD section now as compared to back then. I do believe that BD has the support of more major movie studios then HDDVD does.

Yeah, I noticed this too. This sucks since I'm stuck watching the standard DVDs from Netflix and my XBox 360 HD-DVD drive just sits there now. We need more movies on HD-DVD dammit!

Because they signed exclusivity agreements with Sony? At a minimum you won't see anything from any of the Sony owned studios on HD-DVD.

haha.
That may sound silly but its kinda true.
VHS and BetaMax were very competative until the porn publishers decided to use VHS.
They may not seem like a big industry but they put out movies at a much faster rate than normal studios.
I also recall for a while there most dirty movies cost between 40 and 50 bucks on VHS.
I'm glad to see that trend changed.

Now we just wait to see the first truly Hi-def smut film and all be well again.

Maybe in 1985 it was true, but the internet steals market share every year and will eventually overtake DVD/video sales. The whole VHS vs BetaMax argument is pointless today.

At the music store I manage our HD-DVD section has quite a few more HD-DVDs then BRD at this point. We're selling more HD-DVDs as well.

Eh, I remember last week a host of new HD-DVDs came out and maybe only one or two new Blu-Ray movies came out. They're still too damn expensive at their entry point though... why would I pay over twice as much just for (sometimes noticeable) better picture quality. Although, I have no qualms buying the $20 HD-DVDs at Wal-Mart, but seeing some movies going for $30 and $35 is just ridiculous.

The ads on tv that state blu-ray, those are the movies produced by Sony, so they're beefing up their advertising. On the other side, Toshiba does not make movies, so they cannot self promote themselves like Sony can.

I hope your HD-DVD section has more HD-DVDs than it does Blu-ray discs.

walmart.com has bd movies from 20-28 bucks. also the improvement in video quality... i think its pretty darn noticeable. also, not sure if this is accurate, but walmart has 114 bd titles and 109 hddvd titles for sale on thier website.

The only way you are going to see a visual difference between HD-DVD and BR files is by examining screenshots. I've yet to see an objective test that shows BR having a better image across several movies. Both have *far more* than enough bandwidth for hours of clean HD video, and the rest is up the the device.

And I'm sure the devices will vary in the quality of their output, but its got little to do with the encoded data on the disc.
