HD 7770 is enough istead of buying HD 7850 ?

i'm planning to buy a gpu for gaming, is it enough to have a hd 7770 than a hd 7850 to max out latest and future games in a 1280x 1024 resolution? i'm short on budget

If you abosulutly cant strech to a 7850 then settle with the 7770, but a bit more details about PSU and CPU and you motherboard would help
 
On 1080p, a 7970 GHz can max out every game and play them smoothly, and will be able to do so for some time to come. In two years time, it'll probably be able to play demanding games at medium settings smoothly.

Since your resolution is about 65% as many pixels as 1080p, you'll need a card 65% the speed of a 7970 GHz to achieve the same. This is of course assuming that your CPU won't bottleneck; I would say you need at least a stock clocked i5 because the same applies to 7970 GHz on 1080p. What is your CPU?

Techpowerup's AMD Catalyst 12.11 performance charts reveal that on 1280x800, 7850 is 65% the speed of 7970 GHz, and on 1920x1200 it is 54%. So no, I don't think a 7770 will cut it. Go for the 7850 and overclock it when the games require it. Another reason to go for the better card is that it'll be better able to play games on a higher resolution, should you upgrade your antique monitor
 
I just moved on from 1280x1024 and I can tell you that it's not enough if you want to both max everything out at smooth frame rates. My gtx 460 is the bottom of the barrel in the gf104 family, but it's not much slower than a hd 7770, and stuff like crysis 1/2 and especially metro 2033 run pretty bad at the highest settings with 4x msaa.

If you also have a solid cpu, things might be different, though I'm guessing you don't exactly own the latest and greatest 😛
 
Well if you letterbox your games to 1280x800 then the 7770 will do awesome. You will probably want to do this anyway since all modern games are optimized for 16:9 (16:10 1280x800 is close enough).
 
Bottom Line, it depends on what kind of games you like? Different genres normally have completely different graphic demands...
 
What CPU are you running? I'm pretty sure a 7770 is not going to max out many games at that resolution, let alone future games.
 
7770 is to 1280x1024 what 7850 is to 1080p... not enough to max out any demanding game. But most games, yes.

Ah well. The CPU will seriously hold back any graphics card upgrade on that resolution.

That build seems familiar... didn't you post a thread about this just a while ago? Did you decide what to do about the CPU issue?
 
it would make a huge diffrence but... it is 4 generations old. Can u maybe get a 1155 i3 this would cost you about £160

With that PC I would probably go for a cheap 7750 or 7770, keep the rest for now and try to save up for a new PC. The 7770 would be enough to play most current games on medium to high-ish settings at 1280*1024.
A Core 2 Quad will not make your PC that much more 'future proof' to be worth the hassle in my opinion...
 
I agree. I wouldn't go higher than 7770, and if you can find one for cheap a 7750 is good. Start saving for an upgrade to a modern platform
 
MSI 7770 £85 is the lowest I can find, practically the same price as 7750 and cheaper than any 650, both of which are inferior cards. It's only good value for money in the UK scale though... £85 is almost 140 USD
 
Depends on how much money you have. If you feel like its a stretch to get the 7850 then its not worth it. 7770 can handle all games from medium to high resolutins
 
At that res you'll be alright. Expect to have to sacrifice details in some games, but for the most part the difference between "very high" and "highest" is almost indistinguishable anyway, with a large performance hit.
 
I strongly advice you against the MSI 7770! I just ordered that as an upgrade for my old desktop, which is now being used as a HTPC/Gaming Rig in my living room and the fan noise in unbearable. It will be returned tomorrow.
When the card is idle (30% fan speed) you won't hear a thing, but once it get's above 50% it has such a high pitched noise, that you really won't enjoy it at all. I'm really dissatisfied with it!
