Yeah, I picked up a 5770 now to stop myself from obsessively checking FS/FT / Slickdeals for a deal on the 4870/4890. Now I can study in peace... or can I?

The 4890 will blow the 5770 away. You can get an Asus 4890 for $179.99

NV better get its act together. ATI practically has every single price segment occupied. Not to mention the shortage of GTX 260 216 and GTX 275 cards from Newegg's listings.

By "blow away" I assume you mean ~10-15%, which is not "blow away" in my books. If the 5770 keeps up with the 4870, then that should be the case. But my problem is - I don't have a second 6-pin PSU connector with me at school (my PSU is modular and I left my bag of cables at home), so I figure I might as well get the new generation. I'm coming from a failing 8800GTS 320mb, so any upgrade will be fine by me. It's been a while since I've jumped on the new technology bandwagon, anyway.

I would have expected the 5770 to be somewhere between the 4850 and 4890, but the performance from the benchmarks seem rather disappointing. I'm hoping this changes as the driver matures.

it easily beats the 4850 and is basically on par with the 4870 so isnt that right where you were expecting it to be??

Yeah but what person (with two 6 pin power connectors on their PSU) would run a HD4890 over a HD5850?
