in terms of capabilities; I already have a 9800 GTX+ because I got it for like $150 (CAD), I was just wondering though.

4X16X - slight edge nV
8X16X- edge ATi
PhysX- nV (not on ATi)
Stereoscoipic-nV (not on ATi)
DX10.1 - ATi (not on nV)
Tesselator-ATi (not on nV)

They are about the same, really a wash depends on what games you play, shrug.

Edit:
oh and nvidia has physX
and ATI has directx 10.1

The guy already as a 9800 tho.. super pointless to sidegrade to a 4850. a 4870 or 260 would be the smallest noticeable upgrade.

0X to 4X- big difference.

4X to 8X- small difference.

It really comes down to PhysX, stereoscopic vs 8XAA, DX10.1, pick what's important to you.

HD 4850 > 9800GTX+. Cheaper, faster. You also get driver updates more often by going with AMD.

Actually, this is an excellent point. From what I hear, the stock cooling on the 4850 is meh, while the cooling on both the gtx and gtx+ is great for ocing. Also, since you already have a 9800 GTX plus, Mb get another one for SLI? Assuming your system supports it. Makes much more sense to have 2 9800 GTX+ than a 4850 and a 9800 GTX plus :D

On another note, the 65 nm 9800 GTX from EVGA is only $160 on newegg. I already have one. worth getting another one for SLI? My specs are as follows: evga 780i FTW, q6600 @ 3 Ghz, 2 GB crucial ballistix (plan to upgrade soon, probably b4 video card), a liteon dvd burner, 4 HDD's (one is a raptor) and my PSU: an Ultra xfinity 600 W SLI ready PSU. I believe it meets teh minimum requirements for the 9800 GTX plus SLI; it has a max of 38 Amps on 12V. Just wondering if it is actually enough.

I tend to agree; my sig has a comparison of a 8800 Ultra against the 4850 and the 4850 is about 9% slower than a 8800 Ultra which probably means it'll be about on par with a 9800 GTX+.

At that point it comes down to two things: if you want better driver support go with ATi; if you want better image quality go with nVidia.

While you're there thinking about tactics, let the rest of us think about options and benchmarks for both of these great cards, and pros and cons for each.

Raw Frame rates 9800gtx+

4xAA about even

8xAA 4850

Better card? I think I have to lean towards 4850. It has 1 teraflop of processing power and much better AA support. tends to be faster in games that require more shader and FP32 blending scenes.

4850 = slightly faster
9800 = PhysX

all other are non-issue.

You guys are overlooking the one real advantage of 9800GTX+ over 4850: F@H GPU performance. You can crank out ~6,000 ppd on the nV hardware but only ~2500 ppd with the ATi card.

OP: you already have the 9800GTX+ card, the 4850 would at best be a "sidegrade" -- ie no perceptable boost in 99% of applications. Just keep the nV card and wait for a real upgrade.

Visiontek HD4850 512 is $149 at BB right now. And has $10 off gift card + 10% or 12% off coupon.

9800 GTX+ > HD 4850. Better stock cooler, can work as secondary card dedicated to PhysX, better AIB partners.

Does more frequent driver updates mean better drivers, or drivers that need more work?

i'd always prefer to play my games at highest quality possible (i dont like to settle for less and cut corners.) i'd take the 4850 in a second

Actually, you'd take two 4870x2 in CrossfireX and whine that Crysis still can't be played smoothly in full beauty on your 30" screen. ;)

Anecdotal evidence suggests that while there are three NVIDIA AIB partners and one ATI AIB partner who offer lifetime warranties, some do a better job than others in the actual execution of providing their offered warranties.

:music: WINNER :music:

Double blind gameplay testing in otherwise identical systems where the user can't examine system/drivers/settings to determine which card he/she was using... I doubt that anyone would be able to determine which one was "better" than the other.

Stock cooler means shit if the cards working properly.
The feature of the sound over HDMI alone owns all the little PhysX thingies, as not many game makers care about it.

You are making it sounds like nvidia drivers are better since it is updated less frequently, the fact is, it takes them months releasing countless useless beta craps before they can get their shit together to release an official one.
