considering that the 3870 is 15% slower then the GT then it might not be as attractive powerwise either...
you should really look at watts per frame, not watt per time. Thus it should be adjusted for the achiveable fps.

I hope the main reviews use 16xAF along with 4xAA and 8xAA.

I for one am tired of seeing reviews done without either feature.

You've reviewed the 3870?

Anyone that believes the Nvidia renaming thing is a "bug" is a total chump. This game is critical to position each company as the best value and will undoubtedly be a deciding factor for those upgrading. Any reputable hardware site is going to have to check image quality again to make sure the results are valid. Way to go Nvidia, you cheaters.

f***oy alert going crazy over here...

they're both probably going to cheat on crysis, at least as much as they can get away with it.

no, I am basing it on the data in the OP and from other reviews.

Since it is still under an NDA I have yet to see a review by a credible source like anand.. so I can't be sure. But this is all speculation anyways

And did they get away with it?

well, it seems that I jumped the gun on that comment. If nvidia really lowered IQ on the crysis demo to achieve higher fps then they deserve to be outed on it. Let me amend my statement to just say that I wouldn't be surprised to see either camp fudge the numbers as much as possible, and it wouldn't surprise me if nvidia just fudged them a little bit too much and got caught.

With what? first you have to be sure they did anything wrong/sneaky. And if we new that for sure, there would be no need for your question.

Hmm, no need for aftermarket cooling or a new power supply to run two of these.

The P35 boards that have two PCI slots, crossfire, is this a viable option??? I have an Abit P35 Pro.

Yep you can run em in Crossfire on a P35 board.

You could probably get 2 of the new 8800gts's that are coming out in November for that.

yeah, and an ip35 pro is a much better board than a comparably priced 680i mobo. that's my problem, too. well, that and I don't really play anything that requires xfire, but it would be nice to get 4,287 fps in nwn1...

Since we're talking about Crossfire on P35 boards, I have a question. I've been unable to see how much the 4x PCIe slot impacts Crossfire performance with the newer optimized drivers. Does anyone have a handy link to some benchmarks? The initial benchmarks I saw had serious issues with the P35 in CF.

I got this info from friend who already has 3870 for review but its not official...

NDA will be lifted 15 November and cards will be released 19 or 20 November with +- 200 000 cards available during release.

So ati says it is supposed to cost 200$?
Well according to nvidia the GT was supposed to be 200$... less for the 256MB version...

Someone posted a link that allows preordering this for 260$ for the 512MB version and 210$ for the 256MB version...

260$ for 512MB is the same as a GT costs right now, and this is outperformed by 10% by a GT...

Eventually both this and the GT are supposed to be 200$, so what really determines the final price is the merchant mark up. Which is gonna be matched by the performance and how much people will pay.

What a card is supposed to cost is of no use to me when that card can hardly be found, and even then is jacked up to $300. I'm still going to wait for benches to see how these cards compare at 1920x1200 with AA, but I am not paying $60 for 10% more performance, and if the faster card can't even be found then fahgetabaudit! Also, the overclocking headroom may determine what the real performance is of these cards in an enthusiast system.

I've been wondering the exact same thing. Turns out anandtech themselves looked into this issue a while back.

...what I'm curious of is how things fair today. I know the driver situation has gotten better with both AMD/ATI and nvidia.

Here ya go:

A very good review showing 3 different Crossfire configurations from October of this year. Just wish they tested more games.

hmm looks like I will be getting the 8800GT with the stepup program... actually only the ocing capabilities of the rv670 can change my mind now..

I wonder if the ip35 pro is set up like the asus or the msi mobo in that comparison, thilan29? the asus appears to do much better in xfire.

What do you mean much better? vs. the other 2 boards? (it actually does worse except for one instance)

Here:

Performance seems to be very similar amongst the P35 boards so you'll probably get similar performance to the Asus if you went Crossfire.

If the Abit board was out when I bought my DS3 (Core 2 Duo launch...July 06?), I would have definitely bought that. Of course P35 wasn't out at the time 😛

I'm not considered about price because I believe for a while it will not be more than a $20 difference than a 8800GT. I want to see a lot of performance tests!

Agreed. I won't make a hudgement or bow to "speculation" until some hard reviews later this week. I am ready to make a purchase and this is a great time to be a consumer for sure.

132w for 3870, something like 104 I think for 3850.

@rusin: that palit brand might be interesting if 3870 disappoints.
hmm 132W is pretty much.. I mean clockfrequency difference between these HD3870 and HD3850 is like 16% but difference between 132w and 104w is 27%

http://images.dailytech.com/ni...570_large_perfokll.jpg
According to this HD3870's TDP is 105W and 3850's 95W.. There's that 10W difference.

There are also Sparkle's passive solution coming. It would be intresting to know how well will that cooler work? It's heat sink is actually behind that card (there is smaller plate in front and then heatpipes go to that massive heat sink.. looks like Thermalright HR-03's little brother which have that metal plate added. It would surely be nice design if you could add fan there if you want to.

Then there is this Gainward-brand passive cooler:

http://www.overclockers.ru/ima...2007/11/05/gain_02.jpg

first off heat leakage is not linear.

also the ram uses more power too at a higher clock.
