About 2 weeks now I have been working a lot so I haven't been able to really play with my Gaming rig. I have an HD 3850 512 from Saphire that started going ape shit one day a few weeks ago.

Basically after a while the fan would reach 100% and then shut down the PC. First it happened in a fresh install of Quake 4. Now it happens in EVE too or any other game I play for more than x amount of minutes where x is the time it takes for the GPU to heat up.

It idles at 45c at 30% or at 100% fan strength. It slowly creaps up in EVE. One moment its going fine at 62-65c at full load and you think its all fine. Then 20 minutes later you do something that touches the video card and the fan immediately hit 100% and I loose signal.

Now, a little research on guru3d and techpowerup and the blurb on the new Rivatune suggest that there is a early bios mishap with the 38x0 series for the fan. Against my better judgement I even checked on the Newegg comments on the card since it recently hit 129$ AMR and some people have had the same problem... after a while the cards just seem to really frack up with the fan.

So I put on a fresh copy of Vista 64 and slapped on the 8.3 drivers and CCC and put Rivatuner on. I wanted to manually set the fan profile to always be at 70%. This seemed to solve the problems of overheating and I did play EVE for about an hour and a half before the problems started happening in Vista 64 too, as I was on XP 32 before. So I decided to up the anti to 85%. Fan is cranking higher, the app is working fine. Yet... bam... happened again. Now its set to 100% and well... it just doesn't seem to cool this summabitch after a while.

Anyone else having these problems? So I have a choice. RMA and hope its broken and gets fixed or opt to buy 3rd party cooler. I also had similar problems with my X1900GT, go figure. One this is for sure... no more saphire cards for me. I guess I will have to live with my 8800GS on my other machine for a bit if I have to RMA this one. Anyone else have any other suggestions?

You need better air circulation in your case :! I did mod my case so its always cool even in the 40C Australian Summer :!

You have to make sure that their is cool air coming in and hot air leaving the :! Don't let the hot hair be stuck in the case creating more heat.

Get 1x 120mm fan bring in fresh air from the front of the case and 2x 120mm making sure hot air is left from backside of the case.

Air is fine in the case. 120 up front, 120 in back. Aluminum case with side panel vent inline with graphics card with access to fresh air to pull in. Does the same thing with the side panel off and the AC cranked down. Intel C2D is fine at 1.8ghz or 3.0ghz. Its been working fine for about 4 and a half months.

Sapphire's rma service is horrible. If i were you, i'd just buy a good 3rd party cooler and call it a day. If the cooler still doesn't fix it, then you could rma it. But to wait forever with sapphire and risk getting a better or worse card than what you sent in...i'd try the aftermarket cooler first. :)

Give the latest BIOS for your card a go at techpowerup's VGA bios database- I think fan fix started with the 71 Bios....check the latest sapphire BIOS there.

the latest saphire bios is the one on the card unfortunately. It crashes even when I run the fan at 100%. It starts at 65 underload and it just never stops going up. Takes about an hour or so to get there though. Sigh... I am just going to buy an antec 900 like I wanted and ditch this case. If then it still happens I'll rma this card and use my 1900gt or 8800gs in the meantime. I just don't want to butcher my lovely ubuntu box for my gs.

Try Other vendors BIOS with the same Memory.....if Samsung 1.0ns I'd suggest the HIS Turbo-x 77 bios, thats what I'm on now and its works great.
