http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/06/14/htc-no-gingerbread-for-the-desire-because-it-cant-handle-it/

Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.

The Desire is essentially a Nexus One+Sense UI, right? Once again, Sense screws the user. :/

Sense only screws the small percentage of users who don't want it, it sucks that you are in the minority, but thats life.

I'll take Gingerbread and other updates over a company's proprietary UI overlay any day of the week.

Sense UI takes up an enormous amount of RAM... my thunderbolt only boots up with ~150mb free.

how much do you need? I have Sense + 6 things open on my phone and my free memories sitting at 70 megs. I don't see how I could possible use it all up. Even if I went out of my way to try and do so. And even with more free memory with CM7 + Launcher Pro, Sense is still more responsive on my device *shrug*

I've got the Desire Z and am waiting for the Gingerbread update. I'm hesitant moving over to a custom rom because of security concerns. I might have to if they cancel the update for the Z.

You have the first device ever to run cm7 slower than Sense. Congrats, I guess.

No, Warm Z twopointtwo is faster than CM7 on my phone, Virus or whoever's behind Warm Z's a genius. It was a bit buggy but when I ran Virus'es Infected rom my phone was the fastest I've ever seen it. Sense can be outstanding, and Warm Z's proof. Sense 1.0's slow as hell, but 2.1 flies for me.

I'm going to call BS on that.

What security concerns? Issues with the locked aspects of the Desire Z?

Call BS I run one of Virus'es roms and my phone absolutely runs faster than with any of the other roms I've tried. I never said it was stock, or even which version of Sense I'm running. Virus is a GOD, imho he's hands down the best Android dude out there. What he's done with the Kingdom rom's nothing short of amazing.

Indeed :).

Unfortunately it has to be said: How big is Windows (XP) user base again ;)?

I'm installing ADB again now so i'll see what's available. I think i've pushed the thread a littl off topic now anyhow.

a custom rom won't be inherently less secure than stock android - it is the same OS, after all.

i suppose there is some small chance that the newer kernels or libraries you find in custom roms would introduce some vulnerability that wasn't there a few versions ago. But, by that logic, newer kernels and libraries which you find in custom roms would also patch vulnerabilities that you find in older/stock android.

If HTC can't get Sense + Gingerbread on the device, it should just offer a vanilla gingerbread rom as an update option and let the user decide. They can call out the fact that none of their favorite sense features will be available just to scare some people off, but for the rest that want the newest and most secure version of Android, they should offer an upgrade path to stock gingerbread.

This is why I avoided the Nexus S 4G. It's got last year's high end hardware under the hood. There's a very real chance that the next round of Android updates will leave this phone in the dust. I doubt that the Nexus S will get updates other than IceCreamSandwich. - That's just in my humble opinion based on past observations.

Quebert...
I thought the same thing too until you run something that is memory intensive whilst having running services in the background. The new 2.1 and 3.0 stuff just takes up too much room. It's meant for 1gb phones.
BTW, the real hero is mikmik, they all use his stuff in the Sense ROM world.

i appreciate that, but 99% of the anandtech posters are a bit more user savvy than the average phone user. You and most others on this site are not enough of a financial force to change HTC's decision. If HTC could please all of their customers they probably would, but they will let some of them down, and the ones they let down are the ones that will make them the least amount of money.

It sucks, i agree, i would rather have the update as well, if anything, i hope this sends a message to HTC to make phones with enough memory in them in the future.

In HTCs world it's ok for their users to run outdated software with known kernel vulnerabilities so long as they get to keep foisting their software crippling bloatware down peoples necks.

*slow hand clap.
