HBO's "Ballers" (their first major stinkbomb?)

i think it looks awesome. seen the previews for it during some GoT episodes. i'm a big fan of the rock too. i like the whole vibe i get from that show, reminds me of entourage.

Looks better than entourage, which isn't saying much, but I'll give it a shot. The Rock and Rob Corrdry are better than any of the entourage actors, it looks like it will address brain damage, and perhaps the ethics of the business. So, it'll have the boobs and wealth fantasy of entourage, but a little more actual drama.

I bailed on entourage during the 3rd or 4th season when whatever drama and commentary on hollywood had gone away. This looks better than entourage, season 1.

looks fucking retarded to be honest.

far from their first stinkbomb though. how are you going to have a show called hung about a dude with a huge dick and never show it a single time? fuck you, hbo.

How would this be their first bomb? It looks like Entourage with athletes instead of movie stars and with the world's most profitable actor.

High production values and a good premise... but I can't believe HBO is giving The Rock his own show. I don't get what everyone sees in him, he STILL can't act. At all. Anything he is in is automatically considered a joke to me, similar to Vin Diesel.

They both play a particular role well.

Vin Diesel is far worse than The Rock. At least The Rock has some charisma; Vin Diesel is a fucking dial tone.

WTF does that have to do with acting ability?
He plays a certain role well -- that role is "action hero". Not "actor"

Very true. But the problem with The Rock is he always comes off as a non-actor sports figure trying to act. He's not an actor acting. He has that "I'm a big name personality making a cameo in a movie" feel to him... which doesn't holdup well except in action movies (where there's little acting required). He's always got that twinkle in his eye saying "hey, we're in on this little joke together, right"

That's because that's how they keep casting him. If you look at Find me Guilty you realize that. You can't really blame Diesel though. He has made $50-100 million playing the same character.

I dunno about you, but if I'm dropping 200 million for a movie or 75 million for a TV series, my primary consideration is hiring someone who can make my money back. Their ability to act comes second.

Nobody questioned the bankability of the person. What was being discussed was their talent. I don't care what HBO makes on the show or not -- I care about how good it is. Rome was FANTASTIC and HBO cancelled it due to it being too expensive.

HBO doesn't give a fuck how good the show is, they only care about how much money they'll make.

Gotcha -- I guess I should have said "I'm not questioning his bankability". I don't doubt greater minds than me at HBO have decided they will make money off this. That doesn't mean it's not going to suck. There are PLENTY of movies/TV shows (many starring The Rock) that have sucked rocks (no pun intended) and still made money hand-over-fist.

I dunno, he was fairly decent in that kids movie where he played the tooth fairy. Not exactly an Oscar worthy type role, but he showed a different side. He's a charismatic likable dude who could probably act in a real role given the chance. He's always going to be the action star, but I could see him doing something non action and pulling it off. That said yeah he's the action star that's what he's best suited for.

Even if you don't watch wrestling, some of his promos were really good, he can be very funny and he's exploding with personality.
