Don't watch the show much but i love Big G! use to go see back yard band growing up back in the day. glad to see he's moving onto better things.

First episode of the The Wire was terrible. After the second and third episodes though I was hooked. Great show.

forgot about this show - my friend has the whole set and I almost thought I didn't have anything to watch during the school year after I finish the office.

Ugh, wherever you're at with the office -- just quit now. It turns staaaaaaale, just quit while you're enjoying it.

Added it to my Netflix, was hesitant but with people who seem to have similar taste than me praising it I can't but watch it.

Really the best five seasons of any show ever... And this from a HUGE Dexter & Sons of Anarchy fan...

FX is giving HBO a run for it's money right now though...

I just couldn't get into it. Was so slow. I sat through all 5 seasons, it was watchable at best.

Maybe I should watch it again in case I missed something...

Have to watch this myself... it's kind of funny, I have friends in other countries who are fans of the show, and they're astonished when I tell them I've actually been to Baltimore.

I live in Baltimore! Part of me still wants to go to the rim store where Marlo held court.

I don't think it was terrible, just slow. It took them a while to set up all of the characters and lay the groundwork.

The only part of the show I really disliked were the early bits of season 5.

(IMHO) Oz and Sopranos are better even though all 3 shows do fall apart in some form as time goes on. And Breaking Bad Season 2 *is* the best season a dramatic TV series has ever had. With those 2 points out there The Wire is still a good show, I just don't see the feel the extreme love everyone else seems to for it.

I can not explain how incredibly great this series is/was. I wish I could erase it from my brain and rewatch it again from the begining to experience the joy of each episode.

SO.FUCKING.GOOD

Personally I liked The Shield better than The Wire.

However, I did watch The Shield first.

Exact same process and feelings as me.

Edit: wait... wut? You like the Shield better? Oh man... I dunno purbeast. You're starting to sound like BBQ!

The Wire is so deep and authentic. I doubt any show will ever top it in quality. Half or more of the major events in the show are based on real events in Baltimore. Each season has a theme relating to the modern American city and where it went wrong. The creators were a former detective who actually did wire tapping (and who arrested a real-life stringer bell sort who plays the deacon in The Wire), and a former Baltimore Sun reporter. I've never seen a show that was compelling in the surface and also had so much to say about modern life, politics, and institutions.

I like Treme almost as much. It is deep as well, but not as epic in scope as The Wire; But it is more approachable and engaging because of all of the amazing music. Definitely on track to be the second best show I've seen.

Haha, I live in Bmore and find this hilarious. People who don't live here think it's just a bunch of Omars, Marlos and Barksdales walking around shootin' shit up.

"Welcome to Baltimore. Have you been stabbed more than once yet?"

Wire lived up to the hype. Unfortunately I'm halfway through Six Feet Under which was also a fan and critic darling, but I have to say I loathe these characters and I find the show really...boring. I'm still watching because I now own the series anyway, and HBO series are only 12/13 eps per season so the time commitment is far less than a 22 episode season on network tv.

Ha, very true. I used to live on St. Paul Street in Charles Village, and my mother seemed to think I was in the middle of the hood. Doesn't help that a house on my old block was busted for guns & drugs a couple months ago, and that Hopkins researcher was murdered three blocks to the South. For some reason she's much less sketched out now that I'm in Fells Point.

I agree somewhat about SFU. I probably like it a bit more, but overall am underwhelmed by it and have a hard time feeling engaged because most of the characters are unlikeable.

I finally finished watching Deadwood last week, and I must say that as much as I love the Wire, and McNulty and Omar, etc....Al Swearengen is absolutely the greatest character created in any dramatic series.

Holy fuck, whatta badass.

Aw I wanted to make a thread about the the wire but this thread is fairly recent so BUMP

I watched through the all the episodes in the past few months. Great show indeed. I never heard about the show until not very long ago which is really surprising to me. I had HBO for many of those years too. It was just all Sopranos back then. No one talked about anything else Sopranos was a very 'good' show but The Wire is a great show. I guess it was just too complex to hold people's interest and short attention spans. Sopranos is over the top and The Wire is one of the most realistic fiction shows ever...if that makes sense. Great characters also...McNulty, Bunk, Lester, Kima, Prez, Herc, Carver, Daniels, Bubs, Omar, Proposition Joe, Stringer Bell, Avon Barksdale, Deangelo Barksdale, Bodie, Brother Mouzone, Cutty, Snoop, Rawls, Burrel, Carcetti, Clay Davis, Valcheck, Jay the fat man, the Sobotkas. Those are just off the top of my head, and I have a short attention span myself. So many memorable characters which you don't see much these days in tv or movies.

*spoilers*

The police squad in the wire never really got much done 😛...pretty much the only guy they ever caught was Avon Barksdale and some of his cohorts. Didn't catch the Greek and his right hand man, didn't catch Stringer Bell (though they almost did), didn't catch Marlo. They didn't exactly get much done with all the work they put in. I thought season 5 was somewhat disappointing but still good. Kinda seemed like they bought the Greek back to the series so they could get another shot at catching him but it never happened. I would have liked to see them go in the direction of chasing and catching The Greek and Marlo instead of the whole homeless serial killer farce. All the detectives always just catch shit from their bosses and the mayor and all that every season, their cases always get shit on. It would have been cool to see them in full force with a fully funded unit for one season to go after Marlo and the Greek.

Omar comin!

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit
