looking up hotels and literally reports of bed bugs everywhere. wtf, I thought it was an east coast thing. Is it something you can't escape at hotels these days?

Exactly why I keep my luggage in the bathtub when I stay in hotels. It then goes right into the garage when I get home and all the laundry gets washed in hot water.
