I have this game, but I hear it is seriously lacking in what it has promised, not that I know because I bought it off steam and since 40 inch monitor doesnt do some resolutions, I haven't been able to play the game, so I am not certain, do some research. Hey if you know how to get this game to open in windowed mode with steam, let me know. Oh yeah, and the -w; -windowed; etc. options don't work, nor does alt enter, ctrl enter, shift enter, or even ctrl alt del.

This is a good deal if arcade shooters are your sort of game.

Essentially, HAWX is a modern version of the old arcade game Afterburner. The graphics are really nice and the gameplay is smooth. However, for myself it was a little boring as I'm more of a sim guy. I played the demo but didn't both going past that and buying the game itself.

As for the resolution. At least in the demo you can go into the video options and turn the full screen option off. Make sure you turn the resolution down to something your tv/monitor supports first, of course. Just as a test I just tried it and was able to set it to 800x600 in a window.

I'm a flight simmer myself but every once in awhile I need to let out my steam.
That being said, this is the game that serves that purpose.
In for one.
Thanks OP.

I suggest those that haven't played it, try the demo first.
They have some very weird camera angles going on in some cases...

With the assistance off mode?

I'd agree with trying the demo first, however, don't judge completely on that first mission. For whatever reason the camera is locked to 3rd person with assistance off. I think its clearly a bug, because if you struggle through the training mission you can adjust the camera angle without issue in the 2nd mission.

I personally wasn't impressed with the demo. As someone mentioned already its extremely arcadey, definitely not a sim. Your jets have a payload of like...200 missiles and infinite MG ammo lol. The graphics are good, especially the terrain, however, enemy planes, boats, tanks etc. never look like anything more than HUD box indicators due to the speed of the game and high resolutions. Terrain looks great and all but when you're flying around its mostly blank, blue horizon and little HUD indicators.

Other than that, the cut scenes, briefings, and intermission portions weren't anything special and didn't really contribute to the game's atmosphere. Like many Tom Clancy branded games their character model art assets in these cut scenes could use a lot of work.
My favorite feature was XBox 360 controller rumble support.

Ace Combat series is a bit more fun, 3rd person mode is wonky. HAWX seems like it would work better on a console.

The demo was locked on the 3rd person "assistance off" mode on purpose. In the full game, it's the fifth mission - there are four preceding missions where you can only use the assistance on mode. They're really just glorified tutorials that teach you how to do various things. The fifth mission is a tutorial on how to use assistance off mode, so they lock you into it.

IMO not the best way to do a tutorial, at least for a demo, but that's why it's locked that way.

The story, voice acting, and character animations were all ridiculously bad. The worst, though, were definitely the character animations used in cutscenes and during missions. Not only do they look bad and low-tech, but they use a generic looping "mouth moving" animation instead of trying to synchronize their mouths to what they're saying. So it's common to see their mouths moving even when they're not talking. Luckily, there's not too much of that in the cutscenes (all of which are skippable), and it's pretty easy to ignore during the missions.

sounds like a hoax, is this legit?

thanks for your input, chizow and AstroManLuca. if pretty gfx is all it got going about it, then might as well play the demo and call it a day.

Having played the demo I wouldn't pay whole price for this game in the first place.
With this price I'd decided to give it a shot.
No surprise to me that such a new release and its price already has fallen fast.
