No one in particular, certainly no one in this thread. But I've heard people express amazement at the idea that scientists have "slowed light down" - something their eyeglasses have been doing forever.

I think most people assume that lenses just re-direct light. So that would explain the disconnect.

they redirect light by slowing it down. Hence refraction and why lenses work. We don't assume there's a big hand pusihing the light around in the lens now do we?

Would make a good beginning to a hard sci-fi novel:

Quasars are the aftermath of an alien civilizations attempt to get the frak out of here before the eventual heat death of the universe.

But do the quasars play Jimi Hendrix?? ^_^
